Three young Englishmen, Michael
Turner and Norman Rutherford, both
30, and their partner, Brian North,
29, have struck it rich. They have in-
vented a home video tape recorder
which will hit the American market
later in the year for around $175. The
home TV recorder is about the size of
a regular sound recorder. Picture and
sound are recorded on the same tape,
with 11-inch spool giving 44 minutes
of recording time. This machine
means that the American public will
soon be able to tape their favorite TV
programs, store them, then play them
back at will through their own video
sets. Viedo tape recorders, currently
used in commercial broadcasting, are
intricate mechanisms which cost be-
tween $10,000 and $62,500. First in
the field of low-priced home viedo
tapers, the three bright Englishmen
have sold a 51% interest in their
company to Cinerama, Inc., because,
as they put it: “The principles in-
volved in our machine are original
but simple, and the Americans would
soon have been trying to find ways
around our patents.”

that the mortgage will be paid off
so that no expense in perfecting the
title would ever need be incurred.
However, it is risky business for you
when you are putting your life sav-
ings into the purchase. And, even an
“owner’s” title insurance policy may
not cover every possible defect, or
the value of improvements added af-
ter purchase.
These are a few of the reasons why
a title examination is an important
safeguard to you. When it is complet-
ed, the attorney gives you a written
opinion stating his conclusion as to
who owns the land, the defects in or
charges against such ownership, and
the requirements to be met, if any, to
make good record title.
Off-hand this may seem a simple
operation. In fact, it is not. It re-
quires the interpretation of numerous
deeds, mortgages, wills, court decrees
and other instruments; the considera-
tion of the order in which transac-
tions and events affecting the title
occurred; and the application of sta-
tutes and court decisions to the var-
ious situations disclosed in the ab-
stract.

WASHINGTON—The House com-
mittee on government operations re-
ported Sunday that the federal gov-
ernment is worth more than it owes.
In its annual report, the committee
said that the United States owned
$315,000,000,000 worth of land and
property throughout the world as of
last June 30 — $9,000,000,000 more
than the national debt then.
And, according to the committee,
that $315,000,000,000 figure is a con-
servative one, for the federal govern-
ment records some property at a
fraction of its actual worth.
The federal books, for example,
list the 18 acres of White House
grounds as worth $1,000. They pro-
bably could fetch millions on the
open market.
The committee did not specifically
explain why the White House
grounds were valued so low on the
federal books. But it did note that (
most government property is listed
at its original cost.
The report carried an array of sta-
tistics:
The federal government owns 771,-
000,000 acres of land worth (at origi-
nal price) $90,000,000,000.
Its personal property on this land
is worth $225,000,000,000.
During the last fiscal year, the
property of the United States jump-
ed $15,000,000,000 in value.
The Department of Defense owns
most o fthe federal personal property:
$133,000,000,000 worth. Much of this
is military hardware that, wouldn’t
have much of a civilian market . . .
The West Point Military Academy
with its 16,003 acres carries a value
of $83,000,000 although its probable
worth is $161,000,000.
The Annapolis Naval Academy al-
so carries a low value of $62,000,000.
Its actual worth is $86,000,000.
Capitol Hill real estate (at modern j
prices) is worth $459,000,000.
The military departments own 41,-
862 square miles of property in the
United States — if put together, this ;
would be about the size of Tennessee.
The Department of Defense has
more than a $1,000,000,000 property
investment in each of seven states:
California, Texas, Alaska, Virginia,;
New York, Florida, and Maryland.
The 36 buildings of the Smithson- :
ian Institute were worth $32,000,000. i
The Tennessee Valley Authority’s j
153 installations carried a value of
$2,000,000,000.

Don Hefton, a member of the Texas
Legislature for the previous two
years, has begun his campaign for re-
election to a second two-year term.
During the last session of the Legis-
lature, Hefton was appointed vice-
chairman of the Claims & Accounts
Committee, which processed $400,000
of small claims by individuals a-
gainst the state. He also served on the
important Revenue & Taxation and
the Congressional & Legislative Dis-
tricts Committees.
“In asking the voters of Grayson
and Cooke Counties to elect me to
a second two-year term to the Texas
Legislature from District 49-F, I re-
new my promise to hear each view-
point presented to me on every issue
and to judge each issue on its mer-
its. I will support those issues which
encourage sound fiscal policy, initia-
tive, and individual freedom of
choice; and I will oppose those which
do not. The experience gained during
my first term will be used to the
best of my ability in working for
the benefit of all citizens of this dis-
trict, without partiality,” Hefton said.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Hef-
ton of Sherman, Don is a graduate of
Sherman Public Schools and of Aus-
tin College. Fie is presently associated
with Soil Improvement Corporation,
a distributor of farm fertilizers in
Grayson County.

Thinking of buying or building a
new home this year? Whether you
buy a completed house or simply a
lot to build on, how will you know
whether you are receiving a good
title to the property you purchase?
The safest method is to have a title
examination made — that is, a care-
ful study of the abstract and other
title evidence.
Here are a few of the common
sources of trouble in real estate
transactions to show why minor ex-
pense of a title examination is justi-
fied.
Many persons sign “earnest money
contracts” believing they are mere
receipts with no serious implications.
In reality they may specify, among
other things, the kind of title you
must accept.
A “warranty deed” from a respon-
sible seller is comforting to have but
it is a poor substitute for a careful
title examination. A warranty deed
does not guarantee a marketable title.
Moreover, serious title defects may
not come to light until long after the
seller on a warranty deed is dead,
has moved to an unknown address,
or is bankrupt. Even if he is avail-
able, a good title is much better than
a law suit.
The fact that the seller has posses-
sion if an “abstract” does not mean
that he owns the property. An ab-
stract is only a history of a title. Pos-
session of an abstract no more, indi-
cates ownership of land than posses-
sion of the history of Texas means
that you own the state.
Some purchasers of land feel safe
because the title is being examined
at the time of purchase by an at-
torney for the mortgage lenders, or
because a “mortgage” title insurance
policy is being furnished. This seems
logical but is a dangerous theory.
The “mortgage policy” protects only
the lender, and mortgage lenders are
sometimes willing to accept less than
good record title as security. This is
sound business for them because,
