cation. April is usually the best time.
Divide the remaining half of the fer-
tilizer into three to five applications
and apply at 10 day to two week in-
tervals. Do not fertilize your fish
pond after June 1.
After this date the oxygen supply
in the water could be depleted to the
extent that fish will die.
Distribute the fertilizer evenly over
the pond surface by broadcasting
from the banks or a boat.
Do not fertilize your pond if:
1) The pond is not going to be heavi-
ly fished — at least 300 man hours
of fishing per acre per year.
2) The fish in the pond are badly
out of balance.
3) The water has a good plankton
bloom due to natural fertility or run-
off from barn-yards or a fertilized
watershed.
It is time to fertilize farm fish
ponds, says the Extension Service.
Microscopic plant land animal life
called “plankton” is the food supply
for small fish.
Plankton must have fertile water to
be abundant. Ponds usually must be
fertilized for maximum fish produc-
tion just as cropland must be fertiliz-
ed for maximum crop production.
Inorganic commercial fertilizers
used for crops in the area make good
fertilizers for fish ponds. Some that
are satisfactory include 16-20-0, 10-
20-10, 12-24-12, 13-13-13. If the pond
watershed is not fertilized, the appli-
cation rate can vary from 300 to 800
pounds per year for each surface
acre of water.
Organic fertilizers such as barn-
yard manure can be used alone or
in combination with inorganic fer-
tilizers. Apply at the rate of 500
pounds to one ton per surface acre of
water per year.
In areas where the soil is acid it
will be beneficial to add lime. The
amount can vary from 500 pounds to
two tons per surface acre.
Apply half the amount of fertilizer
need for the year at the first appli-
