TALKING IT OVER — Rep. Ben Munson listens as Rotary Club
members question him on the outcome of the recent constitutional
convention. Rep. Munson was in Whitewright last Friday to attend the
weekly meeting of the Whitewright Rotary Club. Rep. Munson was a
supporter of the constitution which was defeated.

all accomplish? “Nicht!”
We still have the same old out-
of-date constitution.
All that trouble and fuss ac-
complished, was to run up a
sizable bill we, the taxpayers, will
have to foot. Rep. Ben Munson
was in town last Friday to attend
the Rotary Club meeting and
Elton and I talked him into com-
ing down to The Sun office for a
while to just shoot the breeze.

Biting The Hand That
Feeds Them, Legislators
Put It To Us Again
We could tell that Rep. Munson
was upset about the outcome of
the latest Austin white elephant.
He said that the thing that
bothered him most was that the
citizens never even got a chance
to vote on the new constitution.
Rep. Munson said that the 118
delegates who voted in favor of
the new constitution had to fight
back tears as Convention Presi-
dent Price Daniel Jr. pounded
the convention to an end amid
shouts and cheers from the
gallery.
At the end of the session, Mun-
son said that the gallery of labor
leaders cheered as the new con-
stitution was killed.
“It reminded me of a Roman
colliseum," said Munson.
It seems to me that those
leaders, along with the delegates
who were against the new docu-
ment, were a selfish lot who were
afraid to let the new constitution
ever reach the people, lest it
might be approved.
Why should a minority dictate
what kind of constitution we
should have?
Although the document lacked
only three votes passing, it may
as well have been a hundred. The
fact still remains that the thing
didn't go over.
It seems to me that those op-
posing delegates betrayed the
very persons who placed them in
their position. Actions of those
delegates reminds me of the age-
old warning: “Don’t bite the
hand that feeds you." I hope in
the next election that those voters
remember how they got those
tooth marks on their hands, and
act accordingly.
Rep. Munson feels as I do that
those legislators opposing the
constitution were acting out of
obligation to special interest
groups that supported them
during their campaigns.
“Some of these people
(delegates) were just flat owned
by organized labor,” said Mun-
son.
Munson said that one o the op-
posing arguments was that they
know better what is good for the
people that the people
Munson said that one of the op-
posing arguments was that they
know better what is good for the
people than the people. I think
that is a car-load. Nobody knows
better what is right for the people
than the people themselves.
Rep. Munson draws some
parallels to the Nixon administra-
tion here, as do I.

provision was the main thing
causing all the rhubarb and one
reason why the constitution was
not passed. Even if the thing had
gone through, it is not definite
that it would have fared well with
the voters. Such irritations as the
submission for prohibition of
parimutuel betting and the set-
ting of a welfare ceiling of one
and a half percent of the state
budget might not have eased the
way for the passage of the docu-
ment.
The goings on down south will
probably be best remembered as
the biggest flop to slither out of
the capitol for years to come.
1 am well aware of the fact that
hashing over “if it had’s” is much
like kicking a dead horse, but the
Texas voters should not forget
what was done to us in the spring
