OPPOSES STONE AGE
METHODS IN SWIMMING
Throwing Children Into "Water Is Bad Practice Corsan Believes "Water
Wings Are of Great Value in Learning: Natatorial Art.
(Editor's Note The following is the
second of three article on swimming
3iy G. H Corsan one of the nation's
foremost swimming: instructors.)
(By G. H. tforsaa.)
The old-fashioned practice of throw-
ing a. boy into the water in an effort
to make him swim is the lazy teach-
er's method and should Vave no place
In scientific swlnmin& instruction.
3Core often than not the boy thus
taugrht will develop a faulty ragged
style that In time of emergency will
nly add to his liability of drowning.
In addition to the question of style
xnd correct stroke many persons have
been terrlried for life by tocu a stone
age method of instruction and have
felt fear of deep water ever afterward.
The proper method of instruction is
or the pupil to be taken to warm
shallow water or If the water is over
hie head he should be provided with
water wings. These latter devices are

the most perfect known for aiding the
pupil to acquire correct stroke. They
hold him up while he acquires a per-
fect motion and he thus can guide the
muscular movements that are known
as the crawl stroke or the trudgeon
as the case may be.
"Water WIh&i Aid to Beginner.
The oft-repeated assertion made by
swimming instructors that water
wings give a false support and do the
pupil more harm than good is absurd.
That a swimmer will rely on the wings
after he had learned the stroke is not
borne out by- facts for the wings then
become an obstruction as the swim-
mer can glide further each stroke
without them- My trouble has been
that the pupil always has been too
ready to discard the wings and I
have had my troubles making them
understand the maxim "Style first
speed afterward."
The best time to learn to swim is In
tioneer. Notwithstanding this vigorous
life he looks and feels as fine as his
photo shows.
Mr. Tohn attributes a considerable
part of the wonderful length of his.
life to Duffy's Pure Malt Whiskey
which has been consistently used by
him whenever he felt the need of a
tonic stimulant. In a letter to a friend
recenly he saiJ in part:
"I was 101 years of age May 4th hav-
ing been born in 1810. For a good
many "years I have used B-uffy's Pure
Malt Whiskey with very fine results.
I always felt much better and stronger
after using it I attribute my long life
to the use of pure liquors taken mod-
ately all my life. As a medicine I could
recommend nothing better than Zuffy'a
Pure Malt Whiskey."
When men and women Dass thp. asre

-decay. Duffy's Pure Malt Whiskey is
the only agent that will produce these
happy results. It improves the diges-
tion and assimilation of the food and
gives tone and vitality to every organ
In the body.
It has been used with remarkable re-
sults in the prevention and cure of all
throat lung and stomach troubles and
all wasting and diseased conditions. It
is invaluable for overworked men deli-

One of the greatest- delusions or
old-fashioned bosh as I should call it
is the prevailing notion that warm
water is enervating. I think the exact
oppposlte is the truth and I believe
in reasonably warm water for nata-
toriums and pools. Why should per-
son use up his animal heat and energy
in fighting against cold water when
he needs his muscular power to glide
through the water. "What child can
absorb instruction while shivering and
shaking with the cold?
- A cold air bath 13 a. -splendid tonic
for the skin but a cold water bath
is a heat absorber which 1 believe is.
Injurious aside from any effect it
might have on weak hearts For those
who have stxdng hearts -nature will
protect the vital organs against cold
and throw out layer after layer of
adipose so the fat will become fatter
and fatter but the kidneys and lungs
and heart of the thin will "suffer from
the abstraction of heat.

JUAREZ PICKUPS. :
i ;
; $ i
One month ago each of the three
cars operating between El Paso and
Juarez carried on an average of 500
passengers to Juarez a day. Now they
.carry an average of 1200. This "j3oes
not include Sundays -when eight or 10
Cars are used and the crowds are
larger.
Juarez imports its kindling wood
ifrom El Paso -because it can be pur-
chased cheaner in El Paso and there is
no duty on it in Mexico.
Old newspapers for use as wrappers
for foodstuffs and other things sold in
Juarez are shipped from El Paso. The
Mexican government does not collect
.duty on these and there is no paper
available in Juarez for these purposes.
The canal on Eighth street is run-
ning bank .full and the Mexican boys
who live in that section are enjoying
swimming.
An American soldier boards every
car going to Mexico and looks' for
American soldiers as they are not per-
jmitted to go to the Other side. The
guard also looks for arms or ammuni
tion that might be smuggled across.
Juarez now has 30 policemen all
dressed in khaki with khaki helmets to
match. The men are equipped with
tmodern revolvers.
Sewing machines- are being import-
ed Into Juarez a note that it has re-
turned to peaceful quiet.
Juarez Is still a drj- town. Not a sa-
lloon is open- on Comercio street and
ythe roadway is now sandy.
