Gossip of Games Here and
On Other Fields of Sport
(By Paul
Dreyfuss the Pirate manager says
he was not stung for slipping St. Paul
$22500 for Marty O'Toole. He says
the heavies batters ini the various
rosters will fan in vain the atmos-
phere when Marty does stunts with
the sphere. O'Toole has been doing
excellent work recently. In two of his
recent games he struck out 29 men.
Oh yes we get you now Dreyfuss!
Chicago and Philadelphia in the
American league fought a close pitch-
er's battle Monday. The game lasted
14 innings and the final score showed
Philadelphia had won 2 to 1- That
was bad enough to make Chi .sore but
one 'of the two had to lose and it
might have been worse.
In the society game Sunday after-
noon bet-ween the Country club and
the officers of the Fourth cavalry the
clubmen batted around twice In the
first inning. The game closed in the
fourth inning "with the clubers bare-
ly nosing out a 21 to 4 victory.
"Bull" Durham is the last manager
to be canned from the Charleston
team. They "have tried six of the
commanders already and as the seas-
on is only a little past half over
maybe they can put the rollers on a
few more.
Several fans believe that Mathewson
is gone for good. The old machine
Mathewson and Myers -went down in
defeat before Brown and Archer of
Chicago Monday. The same pair had
never had a look In before.
The two Cubans Marsans and Al-
meida are a sure enough find for the
Cincinnati aggregation. Marsans is
really the better of the two as he is
a good hitter -and has proved him-
self a bear in stealing bases.

Hill the sporty pill manipulator for
the Millers can bat about as well as
he can pitch. Sunday he cracked a
sky-kisser for two sacks scoring a
couple of runners.
The Boston Nationals lost another
game Monday. Strange Isn't it? Of
course they have won 22 games out
of 99 and that's going some for a
team that can masticate three beany
squares per day.

The highest score made in the City

MANEUVER DIVISION
FORMALLY ENDED
Washington D. C. Aug. S. The
maneuver division that was mobilized
at San Antonio Texas early in March
has been formally ordered out of ex-
istence. For several weeks the divis-
ion has consisted only of a brigade of
Infantry and a regiment of cavalry.
This action merely deprives it of tho
designation and detached the divis-
ional staff officers who are ordered
to their regular posts.
Brigadier general Ralph W. Hoyt
the commander will return to St. Paul
leaving colonel John Ij. Van Orsdale
of the 17th infantry in charge of the
infantry brigade and a regiment of
cavalry which are now made a part
of the department of Texas. These
troops will not be withdrawn until
the situation has completely cleared
in Mexico.
