Feeling that there ia a definite
need for vocational Information
when students are making oat their
programs of study, otBetato at*B.
0. W. are planning a three-day 'vo-
cational conference, Jan. 8, 10 and
11.
The project will be composed of
a serie* of group conferences and
forum discussions together with two
assembly programs dealing with
vocational opportunities for college
women. In addition to the regular
staff, outstanding outside speakers
will be brought to the college to
assist on these occasions, as well
as successful professional alumnae.
All departments of 8. C. W. will
participate In the work of the con-
ference. and it is hoped that these
meetings will be of benefit to stu-
dents in making their choices of
vocations and in chqpsing their
programs of study for the second
semester, the summer session, and
succeeding terms, it was stated.
Students themselves have felt the
need for such a conference as re-
vealed in a student opinion poll
taken by the Lass-O, 8. C. W.
weekly newspaper. The Student Ad-
visory Council headed by Miss
Gayle Roberts, senior from Has-
kell. met and approved the Idea.
"Coming just before the begin-
ning of the second semester, it Is
thought that the conference will
give students who have not decided-
on thMr careers a splendid oppor-
tunity to explore." said Miss Jes-
sie H. Humphries, chairman of the
faculty committee.

nothing moving. Guardsmen slept
leaning agraMiM the walls The great
gate glanged shut after them
"Now we must be free," said Eric.
"Not yet,?< sold a small voice. It
was the Queen of Fairtar again.
“But at least you Have broken the
spell of King Chatter for ten years.
Now he will ateep and the world
will have peace. But Leezen, .you
almost failed in the test. You wept.
For three months of each year you
must join the winter winds and go
remind than of their last friend-.**
“Oo-o-o,” said Leezen.
k "And the other nine months?"
asked Eric. .. 1 \
"Those she may spend with you."
said the Queen. “But there is still
" more task for you. You must
find a suitable queen for the King
of Westphalia to take the place of
Leezen. When that Is done, you may
go where you wish.”
A Queen For The King
The fairy queen disappeared into
the air. Eric and Leezen looked at
each other. Said Eric. "Let us hur-
ry to Westphalia. I want to see Etea
whom I brought from Toyland.''
So they sat on the back of the 1
white fox and he leaped off across
i. from which refreshments the snow covered hills, through
great, silent pine woods and finally
when their hands were getting cold
they saw the lighted castle ahead
of them. They rushed down the
slope through the castle gate and
into the great hall where the King
was sitting with Elsa near him She
was knitting and humming a song
"Oh, children!" i-ald Elsa so
pleased her face shone
"Ah. friends!" shouted the King
So Eric and Leezen told them
their adventures but they didn't
tell the most important part; that
they must find a Queen for the
*— ' 'King. That thgy kept secret.
But Eric had a plan. “Sire." he
said to the King, "your subjects are

warm your heart to see him. Come

“Why. fine!" said the King But
' just then dawn began to turn the
sky pale blue. Leezen's eyelids flut-
tered. she smiled and then she stif- <
fened and became only a doll.
"Poor little doll.” said Eric and
he stroked hdt yellow curia Then
he turned to the King "Ill hold
Leezen and ride on the fox's back
Yon ride your fine, white horse
and Elea can ride with you."

So they had a big breakfast of
hot cakes and chocolate and sweet?
golden tags And then they started
out. Eric peered ahead, anxiously
looking for those mountains he had
seen on the way to the King's cas-
tle They were the mountains that
only grow higher when people climb
them. But he didn't see them. So
he told the King The King laugh-
ed and said. "They are only there
for young, hasty people like you
Once you have passed them you
■ never see them again."
So the party rode on as lightly
as the wind By dusk they hadn t
sighted Toyland yet, and the King
and Elsa took out his flute and
played a lovely, teasing tune and
suddenly the air was filled with
slim, gray ladies whose long hair
streamed behind them
"Haw far to Toy land?" shouted
Eric. "Ma-a-a-any miles," the gray
fairies whispered. “But we are the
winds that blow ships home We
will carry you.*' So they picked up
the whole party and whisked them
all down in front of the Toyshop
"Now to surprise Santa," said
Eric. But in his heart he was think-

and the city's merchants hourly
were receiving goods rushed to them
by manufacturers to replinteh stocks

Most of the stores downtown
which remain open in the evening
for the convenience of persons who
do not have the opportunity to shop

until the very minute they close
the doors, merchants report.
Christmas card collections in all
stores have been stocked and re-

keep the mail moving out and in
on schedule despite the fact that
they are swamped with a near rec-
