Danger Signals
On the Highways
AUSTIN. Jan. 19 — Officials of
the Texas Highway Department
this week told the story about the
bright yellow lines now being seen
by motorists every day throughout
the vast 27,000 mile system of
paved highways.
’’The new yellow no - passing
line being put down on our high-
ways is a double indemnity de-
vice.” State Highway Engineer D
C. Greer declared
“It gives a flashy and obvious
warning of danger to the motorist
who wants to protect his own
life and the lives of others,” he
explained, "and it gives the police
something definite on which to jail
or punish-the driver who apparent-
ly cares little for his life
thereby endangers the lives of in-
nocent motorists in the other
lane.”

Nepotism to some people to just
a bad word. To others it means
money tn the pocket.
Webster’s definition of the word
is "the practice of bestowing pa
tronage through relationship rath-
er than through merit.”
Texas’ delegation in Congress
probably is freer from this ancient
political practice than some states
but Texas has had plenty of in-
stances of nepotism.
And in some cases nobody could
prove that relationship rather than
merit was the deciding factor.
John Nance Garner described as
his "strong right arm” his wife
Ettie. who was his secretary
many years
Slmlliarly. President Truman’s
wife was on his senate staff.
Mrs. Bob Poage, wife of the 11th
Texas District’s Congressman,
works in his congressional office
irregularly, but Mrs. Poage works
without pay Her services are in-
valuable. Poage’a first secretary.
Lacy Sharp of Waco, says Mrs.
Poage was her husband's stenog-
rapher while he was a senator,
•before their marriage.
If a congressman is on Inclined,
there is nothing to stop him from
hiring four members of his fam-
ily to run his office. It would boost
the family income about 013,500
yearly, the amount each house
member receives for hiring a max-
imum of four employes.
Some try nepotism.
One member had his sister-in-
law on the clerk - hire rolls for a
time at 03,600 per year She worked
some. Another had his wife, who
did not work on his payroll for
several months, but removed her
after a Baltimore newspaper noted
the similarity in his and the
“clerk’s” names, phoned his office
and asked questions, and then pub-
lished the story
Some congressmen put cam-
paign aides on their rolls to pay
them for help during an election
campaign Others have put friends
or relatives on the rolls and they
merely endorse the checks and re-
turn them to the congressman
A diminishing few take salary
refunds or kick-backs from office
employes
But most congressmen hire ther
maximum four employes outside
their families.
