'Responding to Recent Suggestions Lo-
cal MHtrtcIans Unite to Give
Free Concert Sunday.
EI Paso is to have a symphony or-
chestra. In response to recent sug-
gestions in The . Herald H. E. Van
Surdam has organized an orchestra of
22 members and the first concert will
be given Sunday afternoon at 3 oclock
in the Crawford theater.

symphony orchestra with regular con-
certs is given the proper support and
encouragement from El Pasoans the
' orchestra will be made a permanent

lections from the opera "Count de
Louxemborg" the orchestra being aug-
mented by a vocal quartet composed of

BRYAN URGES PROTECTION

cently made by a mob in Havre Mont
upon the -Chinese quarter when four
Chinese were driven out of town and
considerable property was destroyed
was the subject of a communication re-
ceived by governor Stewart from sec-
retary of state Bryan. The communi-
cation recites the complaint and adds:
"Complying with the request of the
""charge d'affaires I have the honor to
bring this matter to your excellency's
attention to the end that full protec-
tion may be extended to the Chinese
residents of your state."

tion for the extradition of Harry K.
Thaw was filed by William Travers
Jerome deputv attorney general for
New York. This step was taken be-
cause of an error in a petition filed
last week which placed the indictment
in New York county for the alleged
crime of con;dracy "committed in
Dutchess county."
Governor Felker announced he would
give his decision Saturday on the de-
mand for extradition.

Prisoner Refuses Job

Clyde Stevens; sentenced to serve 19

and a job at $1 a day. The roan had
served eight days of his sentence and
had two more days to serve when
Walter Williams came into the police
station and offered him $1 a day to
carry a banner. The police agreed to
let Stevens out of jaiL but Stevens re-
fused both offers.

Lake who was involved in the killing
of Miss Florence Brown in a confession
credited to Meade Barr who is in jail
herfe charged with the murder of the
young woman appeared before a jus-
tice of the peace for a hearing on a
warrant formally charging her with
complicity in tie killing. Mrs. Lake
waived preliminary trial and was or-
dered held without bond.
Earlier in the day application for a
writ of habeas corpus in behalf of Mrs.
Lake was denied when counsel for the
state made objection to. the wording of
the petition.
SOCIALISTS AND PROHIBITIONISTS
LOSE OUT-IN MASSACHUSETTS
Boston Masa. Nov. 7. The Socialist
Prohibition and Socialist-Labor candi-
dates fared poorly in the state election
Tuesday. The total vote for three
candidates for governor with a few
towns missing and estimating their
vote was:

Socialist-Labor 1924.
None of the parties polled 3 percent
of the total vote necessary to obtain
official recognition.
