PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Geo. C. Moore, Pastor
Sunday School at 9:45 a.m.
Preaching services at 11:00 a.
m. and 8:00 p.m. Subject of the
morning sermon, “The Sin of
Doing Nothing; and
“Wings as Eagles.”
Visitors and strangers eiways
welcome,
trench between rows of lettuce,
as shown in the accompanying
Garden-Graph. Then allow water
from a hose to flow slowly or
even trickle into the trench until
the plants’ roots are thoroughly ,
soaked. A sprinkling of nitrate
of soda dug into the soil at the
base of each plant once or twice a
season will act as a stimulant and
speed growth. Be careful, how-
ever, to give each plant only a
small dose, since an overdose will
do more harm than good.
Slugs are fond of lettuce plants
and must be combatted They can
be discouraged, however, by plac-
ing a circle of lime, soot or fine
coal ashes around each plant, as
illustrated. Many gardeners gath-
er up and kill innumerable slugs
at night with the help of a flash-
light, J

Salad Greens Are Tops in
Victory Gardens
By DEAN HALLIDAY
Released by Central Press Association
LETTUCE IS the most popular
salad green and deserves a place
in even the smallest Victory veg-
etable garden. The largest
amounts of vitamins, however, are
obtained from leaf lettuce and the
loose-head varieties. White hearts
of lettuce are almost valueless
from a nutritional standpoint,
since they lack iron as well as
vitamins.
Cool weather and plenty of
moisture are the two most Im-
portant requisites for growing
lettuce. In fact, any vegetable
grown for its foiiage must be
grown fast if it is to be tender, ■
crisp and of good flavor. Giving
such vegetables, and particularly
lettuce, ample amounts of water
helps to produce fast growth.
One effective method of water-
ing lettuce is to make b shallow

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
SERVICES
“Mortals and Immortals” ’ is
the subject of the lesson-sermon
which will be read in all Church-
es of Christ, Scientist, on Sun-
day, May 16.
The Golden Text is: “Hence-
forth know we no man after the
flesh.” (II Corinthians 5:16).
Among the citations which
comprise the lesson-sermoji is
the following from the Bible: [
“For this corruptible must put
on incorruption, and this mortal
must put on immortality.” (I
Corinthians 15:53).
The lesson-sermon ^o in-
cludes the following passage
from the Christian Science text-
book, “Science and Health with
J Key to the Scriptures,” by Mary
| Baker Eddy: “By putting off the
| old man with his deeds, mortals
I put on immortality.”

METHODIST CHURCH
B. A. Watson, Pastor
Church School, 9:45 ajn.
Morning worship 10:50 o’clock.
Evening worship, 8:00 o’clock.
Prayer service, Wednesday,
8:00 p.m.
If there is in your life a feel-
ing of futility, a sense of guilt,
.a need for forgivness, a desire
for friends, a yearning to do
more constructive work in the
community; you may find sat-
isfaction for all these by wor-
shipping in some church today.
We are inately religious, and,
unless we are expressing our re-
ligious instincts we are denying
ourselves our God-givan heri-
tage. You need the help and
guidance that comes from wor-
shipping God; and the church of
Christ needs just the influence
of good that you alone can give.
Be in somec hurch service this
Sabbath day.
The pastor will preach at both
services today; using as his sub-
ject for the morning worship,
"Religion in Difficult Days,” end
for the evening service, “Love
and the Lost.” You are assured
a warm- welcome at the Metho-
dist Church.
