CHERBOUGH, (/P) — A 30-ton
machine, made in America and
shipped to France for use in the
Renault automobile factory,
stumped engineers after they un-
loaded it from the ship.
The railroads were unable to
transport it in one piece, and .the
engineers were afraid that
bridges would break down under
its weight if it were carried by
truck.
Despite snow and ice on the
road, however, the engineers
had to chance it and using a cap-
tured Germany artillery trans-
port and tractor they virtually
inched their way to the capital.
The bridges held up. The 220
mile trip took four days and a
half to the factory gate, where
a wheel broke under the ma-
chine’s weight just "as it arrived.
Then the Renault people found
they didn’t have a door big
enough to bring the machine
through and had to batter down
a wall to get it installed.
