mentioned a thing or two that
may be interesting in the future.
He said that the time is coming
when buyers will only buy* pota-
toes from the certified growers.
Buyers are taking a serious loss
from storage rot and the grower
is paying for it; so it would be to
everyone’s advantage to produce
clean potatoes. A better price
could be offered. Another point
is the high percentage of number
two and three potatoes that are
produced. More number ones are
needed to help keep the culls off
the market and therefore increase
consumption by the public. Seed
selection will help there. If you
have problems about bedding and
other phases of potato produc-
tion you are free to call on the
county agent. Up-to-date infor-
mation is available on request.
I PLUS 1
EQUALS 1
Every day, the seeming con-
tradiction that one plus one
equals one comes true in our
Prescription Laboratory. It
comes true as our skilled
pharmacists carefully weigh,
measure, and mix one quan-
tity of a certain drujf or chem-
ical with one quanity of an-
other drug or chemical—and
the result of this painstaking
compounding is the one medi-
cine which exactly meets the
specifications your doctor has
laid down!

SEED SELECTION
Ralph Michael of the potato
disease laboratory at Gilmer tells
us $hat we can double our yield
per acre from about 75 to 150
bushels in two years by seed
selection alone. Now, this is a
very profitable practice that has
been tried and proven. Hiil se-
lection is lhe answer. This must
be done at digging time, of course;
so it is too late for us this year.
The idea is to select the seed from
the hills that produce a number of
good colored marketable pota-
toes. Good hills used for seed
will produce good potatoes. Poor
hills used for seed will likely

What
We should
handle every potato that goes
:nto the bed. Any potato show-
ing signs of rot should be dis-
carded. Dipping will not reach
the spores that are under the
skin Also, each potato should be
•’nicked” with a knife to be sure
that the deep yellow color is
present. Strings and other off
sized seed are not recommended.
EARLY SLIPS
Farly slips are desirable since
several yeers of trials have shown
that the latest slips are set in the
field the lower the yield. Slips
set about April 15, produced 200
bushels per acre, those,set about
Maj- 15 produced 125 bushels and
slips set about June 15 produced
only 75 bushels per acre.
FERTILIZERS
Michael also stated that a grow-
er using less than 600 pounds of
commercial fertilizer per acre
is in the wrong business. He
recommends 300 pounds distribut-
ed about ten days before plant-
ing. Sidedress with another 300
pounds in six to eight weeks. He
warns against planting sweet po-
tatoes on ground that has had a
legume cover crop this year. The
best fertilizers to use are 4-8-8,
4-8-10 and 6-10-7 mixtures. One
thing to remember is never to use
abrnyarj manure in the seedbed
or ' in the field Sweet potatoes
and barnyard . manure will not
^e’. along together Because of
disease problems.
