A Largf Corpora‘Jon.
An old lady traveling for the first
time in a large city saw a glaring
sign on the front of a high building
whih read:
“The Smith Manufacturing Com-
pany.”
As she repeated it aloud slowly
she remarked to her nephew:
“Lawsy mercy! Well I’ve hearn
tell of Smiths all my life but I never
knew before where they made ’em.”

Four coaches carrying about 100
lomeseekers comprising the Star j
_^nd company’s semi-monthly ex-
:ursion to the Valley were brought
n on the Branch passenger arriv-
ng at 7 o'clock last night. The
rourists left later in the evening for

ittached to a special train. *
The land-seekers’ party arrived
n the Valley Sunday night going
mmediateiy up the Branch line
where the company’s land near
Pharr was visited in automobiles.
Twenty-five people comprising
:he members of six families remain-
'd there with their newly acquired *
property in the vicinity of Pharr
iot returning with the rest of the
oarty to the North.
Though the evening was disagree-
able many of the tourists braved the
jlements and visited the up-town
business streets during their stay
here. Several members of the party
were very desirous of viewing the
Rio Grande evidently in the hopesj
of seeing it at high water stage
from the rains but when told that
the river was actually falling one or
two of the gentlemen were seen to
open their mouths with utter aston- j
ishment.

PECULIAR POSITION
OF TAFT ELECTOR
An Elector* W*ll Ca*t His Official
Vote for Taft. But Will G«vo In-
dividual Vo*e to W‘lson.
Milwaukee Wis. Oct. 22.—That
politics in Wisconsin are in a topsy-
turvy condition with all traditions
shattered down and thrown to the
winds is well illustrated by the po-
sition of T. M. Thomas of Ladysmith
Wis. a republican elector for the
11th congressional district. Like
all other electors chosen in thir*
state at the primaries Mr. Thomas
has been besought with requests
from all parts of the state that he
declare himself as to what attitude
he will take if elected. In response
to these demands Mr. Thomas has
given out the following remarkable
statement:
“As a nomineo for presidential
elector of the 11th congressional
dis yict on the republican ticket I
have had many inquiries asking for
whom I will cast my electoral bal-
lot if elected. Under existing po-
litical conditions the voters should
know my position on this question.
“Rome newspapers have quoted
me as saving I would vote for Roose-
velt. in this I have been misquoted.
I am a progressive republican but
not of the eleventh-hour bull moose
Roosevelt anything-for-office varie-
ty. If 1 am elected a? a presidential
elector I shall take it for granted
that the voters of this district favor
thet election of Wm. H. Taft for
president and shall cast my electoral
ballot for him.
“In making the above statement
*1 however reserve the right as a
private citizen to and shall east my
individual ballot for Woodrow Wil-
son the only truly consisten pro-
gressive nominee for president.”
