fects of Windstorms.

WA8HNKJTOM D. C. Sept. 23.—The
present season ap|M*ar> to tie particularly
favorable to the development of tornadoes
according to {he I'nited States Weather
Bureau which issues a series of warnings
and definitions of tornado conditions.
It says that tornadoes arc Usually pre-
ceded by high temiierature and humidity—
a weather condition generally said to la?
“sultry.” “sticky” or “oppressive.” Itaii
may come betoray with or after a tornado
or very randy then* may Im* no min at
all. The Imrotueter does not foretell a
tornado though it indicates low pressure;
and tornadoes always occur in a “low*
areu.
The reason in which toruad«H*s may he
expected varies acocrding to the region.
They may visit the Ciulf States in winti r.
Uhd as the season advances the region of
greatest frequency i« in the Plains States
turd the Mississippi Valley fnnn A|>ril to
8eptemlier iarlusitc. In this region Mav is
Hie worst month with April next.. East
of the Ap|wlachian Mountains however
tornadoes rarely occur until after duly.|
Generally they come between 3:30 and 3
p. m.. hut thev mav even (time at night.
WHAT TO IX V
Persons may somewhat avoid tornado
danger by watching the local -igns and
reading the weather na|s which at least
show the conditions which favor tornado
formation. The local signs an* heavy dark
clouds fir-t in the southwest almost im-'
mediately followed by clouds in the north-j
west and north. A funnel-shaped cloud is
a sure sign though there may la* a tor-
nado when such a cloud i- not n*adilv seen.)
tf a funnel cloud can not Ik* seen the
whirling motion of the uir may Im* known
by'a peculiar r airing noise sofewhat like
the rumble of distant thunder or the up-
proach of a heavy train of cars.
If one can -cc the cloud and get an idea
of the direction in which it is moving the'
apne of safety is at right angles to the
dife otiou of motion. The southern margin
is usually mote dangerous than the north-1
Qrn. and this should Im* remembered ml
seeking a p’aee of safety. The width of
path of greatest destruction is ordi-
narily more than a few hundred yards
though this d<*s*ruetive diameter may Im*!
from some rods wide to a half mile. or
sometime- wider. However the worst part
in* comparatively narrow and relative safe-
ly may he hud only u short di-tanct at
tight angles to the line of the advance of
the tornado.
In some of the Plains States there are
sO-culled “eye'orte" cellars and when*
these are not available the southwest eor-
+r of the cellar of a frame building is the
next bo*t place. Hrick buildings an* not
so safe hut the cellar i- probably the
safest |dace in them. In the Omaha tor-
nado of 1W13 very few hrick hoaxes were
seriously dutuaged. These are ordinarily

TORNADOES AND CYCLONES.
Weather iueu define a tornado as a vio-
lent windstorm with rain or liuil thunder
and lightning in which the air masses whirl
with great velocity around a central core
while the whole storm travels across tin-
country in a narrow- path at high s|»ccd.
The thunder and the whirling motion have
given rise to two theories of the derivation
of the word ;as to whether it is derived
from the Spanish “tornado' a thunder
storm or from the Latin “tornare* to turn.
A cyclone in the definition of the Weath-
er Bureau is not necessarily a windstorm
of great velocity hut rather a widespread
storui that moves with no great speed. It-
yvm1£ might cover several states. This cy-
clone or area of low pressure i- indicated
as “low” on the weather ma|»—gives condi-
tions essential to tornadoes. Many . > -
clones never develop a tornado hut a tor
nado never develop- without the cvclone.
and almost invariably the tornadoes occur
in the southeast quarter of the low area.
About 12<t cyclones pa— across the Cnited
States each year moving in a general way
from we-t to east. They are of great liene-
fit because they induce a movement of sur-
face air from the south and southeast and
the fninfnll that makes thi* great interior
valley- a rich agricultural region is de-
IM'tidcnt upon these southerly rnoisure-
lienring winds.
Practically all of the cyclone* of the
warm season gives rise art some time or place
to thunder storms or hail or violent winds. I
These winds may In* violent enough to
cause destruction hut unless they have
the whirling column of air thev are not tor-
nadoes. In the East it i> not always ea-y
to di*4inguis|i the funnel-shaped cloud hut
the lay of the debris utter a -torm will tell
whether there has l*een a twinsing motion.
Tornadoes almost invariably move m an
easterly direction and generally from
southwest to northwest. The average
length of the path of destruction is ulsiiit
twenty-five miles him! this pnth may not he
continuous if the lunuel cloud is not in
contact with the earth during its whole
course. Sometimes it rises and goes for a
considerable distance before descending
again.

BASEBALL GOSSIP.
In the Western league. Shaw of Omaha
is king of swatters and Adams of Hutchin-
son is the leading pitcher.
The Phillies and (iiant- play a double-
header in Philadelphia on October d and
the following day will stage a single clash
I
\ti dosing the sen son.
Pitcher Naylor the New Haven Kastciii
league reeruit is away to a fine start with
the Maekmen. Hi- work so far -tamps him
as a genuine find.
Even it the Cincinnati Keds fail to land
in the first division Matty’s boys are a
much improved out til o\er 10 Hi. when they
finished in the cellar.
While the Ked Sox were aide to come
through last year without the services of
Tris Speaker they surely did miss the
Texan’s great pustiming this season.
(trover Alexander 'lie Phillies star
twirier and Pitcher Eddie Cicootte of tin
White Sox are running neck and neck tor
the leud in the number of games won this
season.
Detroit paid $700 tor Tv Cobb in lotto
and Iris S|M-ukcr was -old to Boston tor
$400 in 1008. Will ctputl value in baseball
talent ever la* secured for a like ammint in
the days to come .*
George Burn- will not follow the lead
of other Giant stars by taking a lay-off
liefore the big -eries. The New York out-
fielder is anxious to eouiplele three year’*
work without a single day’s absence.
Henry Kchreiber the sensational East-
ern league infield* r recently -igtied by the
Bruves will report October .1 at Cleveland
for the* National Army. He dal not claim
exemption.
Not a tew bu-cball critics figure that ill*
Giants’ heavy hitter- will slaughter tin*
White Sox pitchers. Maybe so but dop-
ing a world's -eric- before th*1 hafth i- like
drawing number- at a raffle.
In accordance with tin* established rub-
several of I lie n-cent arrivals in the Giants’
camp wil not receive a lull share ol the big
s|H»lis in the world s -cries. Member- of
the Ibulger- and It***! Sox should worry.
Should pr« -ent baseball condition- pre-
vail at the opening of next -ea-on the
salaries of the diamond |H-rlorm*r- will
undoubtedly suffer. All along the line.
I from minors to majors there is talk ot n
mine!ion in salaries.
The Athletic- still have a chance to gel
out of the cellar before the fall of the cur-
tain. At any rate the Maekmen will im-
prove their last year's figures when they
finished with a percentage of .205.

NO SEIZURE OF
FOODS IN HOME
GOVERNMENT DOES NOT PROPOSE
TO TAKE EATABLES OUT OF HOUSE
DESPITE CONTRARY RUMORS. i
--
I WASHINGTON l>. Sept. 25.—Then
is no truth in a widely circulated state- i
inent that the government ex|»ects to take |
to.id supplies from any family. Both tin-
food administration and the department of
agriculture join in a »t: tement to eoun-
feraet vvliat 'm-iii> to Im- a deliberate propa-
ganda to tin* elteet that the government
inu-utls to take from every family all
canned goods put up hi excess of ] (Ml
quarts.
I his is only one of the variations ot the
rumor which has been widely circulated.
Another statement is that tin- government
has been urging the canning drying and .
preserving of fruits and vegetables s that
they will la- in a convenient form lor the
government to handle and transport when
it takes them away from tin- jienple. Furth-
er elaboration is that these goods arc to
he taken away from the American homes
and^shipM-d to Kugiand.
u one instance a motorist stopped at
a farm house to till the radiator of his au-
tomobile. In the course of conversation he
casually inquired whether the farmer’s
family \^a~ canning all the surplus fruits
and vegetables m order la help conserve
the food supply lie was informed that
the farmer was not doing this because the
govern incut intended to take all I lie canned
goods away except a -mall part of it
actually needed by the family itself.
The authonlie- -tate emphatically that
no such course ha- ever been contemplated
by the government. On the eontrary both
the department of agriculture and the food !
administration are strongly urging house-
wives to can and prc-**rve especially at
this time all -urplu- Iruit- and vegetable-
m order that the hou-ehold- thein-elve-
may have a cheap and plentiful supply of
food.
