TOURISTS COME
TO S. ANTONIO
IN BIG CROWDS
Southern Texas Attracting
More Tourists This Year
Than Ever Before C. of C.
Officers State
SAN ANTONIO. Texas Jan. 25—
Never in the tourist history of the
city has there been such an influx of
visitors as thi* year according to
Chamber of Commerce officials. The
hotels are rapidly filling up and the
Tin-Can tourists have filed to over-
flowing the mammoth public tamping
ground at Brarkeuridge P irk. And
still they arrive each train bringing
its quota while the paved roads lead-
ing into the city are dotted with
wheeled vehicles of every descrip-
tion carrying all types of camp
equipment headed for the public
grou rids.
Chamber of Commerce officers ex-
plain the sudden influx in two ways
hirst the word of mouth advertis-
ing the climate has received; Second
tin* extensive newspaper campaign
launched this year to popularize the
city as a tourist center.
The weather has been ideal for all
types of amusement enjoyed by win-
ter visitors. Temperatures accord-
ing to the weather bureau have tar
exceeded their average normal
warmth reaching us high as 81) de-
grees at times and breaking the mid-
winter record of this section.
With the city crowded with sight-
seer* the picturesqueness of the Mex-
ican village located almost in the
heart of the city is attracting hun-
dreds each night. There the natives
of the Southern Republic stage their
National dances and offer for sale
the various kinds of food considered
most1 delectable in Mexico.
While the Mexican village and the
very romantic atmosphere furnish a
pleasing background for evenings
spent in the city the daytime is fill-
ed with interest for various lovers
of sport by excellent golfing fish-
ing and hunting. For the older
sportsmen amateur tourneys have
been arranged on the “Barnyard
golf" courses and croquet courts.
Twtnty-five of these courts are now j
in operation and ten more are being
installed to handle the newly arous-
ed intearest in these two old games.
Many of the tourists are display-
ing gerat interest in the Lower Rio
Grande Valley .and scores ask in-
formation concerning Valley high-
ways and Valley products as well
as the land values and the desirabili-
ty of the Valley as a permanent lo-
cation. Many of the tourists are go-
ing to the Valley tv» investigate con-
ditions.
