BROWNSVILLE
AND EDINBURG
ELEVENS MEET
Local High School Team
Plays at Hidalgo County
Capital This Afternoon;
Anticipate Hard Game
Brownsville will meet the Edinburg
football team in that city this afternoon
in the second game of the interscholas-
tic league season in what is expected
to he one of the best games of the
eeason. The Edinburg team demon*
strated its strength last Friday by do
feating the McAllen team regarded as
one of the strongest tennis in the Val-
ley by a score of 14 to 0. Brownsville
must win in this afternoon's game if
*4ie is to remain in the running for the
Valley championship. The los* -to Mer-
cedes last Friday gave the* local eleven
a serious setback but if Brownsville
loses no more games there is still the
chance that some other contender may
humble the Mercedes team before the
nd of the season.
In spite of the had weather this week
ihe Brownsville team ha gotten in sev-
eral good evenings’ practice under the
direction of Coach Smith and a prac-
tice game with the Boy Scouts also help-
ed in rounding the players into shape
Several new formation* have been giv-
en the team this week and with a great-
er vaiiety of offensive plays and with
the experience of last weeks game to
steady them the Brownsville hack-
field which did not show up so well last
Friday should show better form thi* af-
ternoon. The defensive work of the line
was a feature of last week's contest
against Mercedes and should cause con-
siderable worry to the team of the Hi-
dalgo county capital.
Coach Smith went to Edinburg this
morning with a squad of 14 men the
trip being made by rail because of the
poor condition of the ro;.ds.
The Brownsville lineup for the game
will be as follows: Torres right end;
Melendez right tackle; Hogan right
guard; A. Tijerina center; Alonso left
guard; A. Bennett left tackle; McGuire
left end; Richards quarterback; Ver-
tices fullback; Scanlan halfback; S.
Bennett half back.
TWO PLEAD Gl'ILTY
Two criminal cases were tried before
the county court this morning the de-
fendant* pleading guilty in each case. A
fine of $100 for speeding was assessed
in one case and in the other in which
a chaige of carrying a deadly weapon
was entered final action has not been
taken.

COUNTY SHERIFF NOW
ALLOWED 15c PER DAY
TO GUARD PRISONERS
The salary of the matron it the
county jail has been reduced from
$75 to $50 per month this reduc-
tion having been made necessary by
a law passed at the last legislature
which requires that county rommisi
sioners allow the sheriff 15 cents
per day per person for safeguarding
prisoners and provides that this
fund shall not exceed $200 per
month.
At the present time two jail
guards and a matron are employed
at the county jail the guards each
receiving $75 per month and the
matron $50. The number of prison-
ers in the jail averages from 40 to
50 making the cost of safeguarding
prisoners approximately $200 per
month.
There was recently some contro-
versy in Cameron county over the
application of this law and the
commissioners’ court applied to the
attorney general for a ruling ami in
his reply the attorney general stat-
ed:
“With reference to this matter
you are advised that it is the hold-
ing of this department that the
amended statutes providing 15
cents per day not to exceed the
sum of $200 per month has the ef-
fect of repealing Article 114-1 Code
of Criminal Procedure and you are
therefore advised that the sheriff
is entitled to receive 15 cents per
day per prisoner not to exceed
$200 per month and this in lieu of
all other compensation heretofore
allowed for the safe keeping ot
prisoners. ’’
Under the old law the county paid
the jail guards and matron hut un-
der the law passed at the last ses-
sion the sheriff is required to hire
the guards and to pay them from
the amount he receives.
