price tendencies prevailed at the open-
ing of today's stock market* Heaviness
was again apparent in the copper shares
[ in further reflection of the pasn^i* of
the Anaconda dividend. Missouri Pa-
cific preferred dropped about a point
and U. S. Ca.stiron Pipe broke 3%.
Prices of the leading speculative
shares crept up slowly in the early af-
ternoon despite a continuance of li-
quidation of Yirginia-Carolina chemic-
al stock and bond issues. Yirginia-
Carolina Chemical convertible 7%’s se-
ries A. collapsed 14*» points to 42%
following an earlier slump in the 7*2*8
with warrants of 15*2 points to 40*2.
Buying of the steel shares steadied
the list somewhat around the end of
the first half hour Gulf States ad-
vancing a point and U. S. Steel com-
mon %. Gains of a point or more also
were registered by Dupont Davison
Chemical and Sears Roebuck. U .S.
| Cast iron Pipe extended its loss to 3%
points tourhing 64% a new 1924 low.
Virginia Carolina Chemical issues also
touched new low prices the common
dropping 1*» and the preferred 2%.
Chile Copper moved to higher ground

CHICAGO Feb. 27. Persistent huy-
| ing on the part of commission houses
gave fresh strength to the corn markrt
today in the early dealings. General
demand was also broader whereas of-
ferings were only of a scattered char-
acter. Bad roads as well as rural dis-
satisfaction with prices were said to he
curtailing the movement of corn in the
country. Opening quotations which
varied from the same as yesterday’s
finish to % cent higher. May 81% to
81% cents were followed by gains all
around.
Wheat and oats sympathized with
corn strength. Some of yesterday’s sell-
ers of wheat turned buyers. After open-
ing % to % (n % cent lower. May
1.09% to 1.09S and July 1.09% to
1.09% wheat scored a moderate general
Advance.
Oats started at a shade to % rent
up May 48% cents then continued to
harden.
Provisions were weakened by a drop
in hog values.
