The Depression Moves West
"A tropical depression hovers in the Caribbean,"
I image a huge, hot hangover lingering atop an island
like a black cloud over a cartoon character.
People along the Gulf become serious.
Celia struck well within their memory.
I never met her, but I've met hovering depressions.
Meterologists attribute to some movement or lack
the peculiarities of people-the other way round-
we grab phenomenona ascribing them to ourselves.
The phone rings bringing Gus' voice to our den.
"I'm depressed," he begins, "low, really low."
again I image a huge hot hangover-lingering.
His call laments disturbances.
I'm not certain of the malady, though I know
while not tropical, it's destsructive.
I contend John Donne misinformed when he said,
"No man is an island." Gus is.
And the depression moves west.
