Several hundred persons thronged the*
gn nds at Washington Park last night
at the Kermesse given to raise funds
for a n« w Catholic church in Victoria

attendance is exp cted at the meeting on
the pork grounds tonight.
The Kermesse was conducted last
night on the order of a regular car-
nival or fair with local persons hand-
ling the booths. There were restaur-
ants florists games and all kinds of
stands of a regular fair. The placs !
was well lighted and presented a pic-
turesque appearance with the hundrod*
of bustling jersons enjoying the Ker-
ntesse.

Pink Grapefruit
Are Brought Here
Two perfect specimens of the pink
grapefr it. Foster were brought to
Brownsville yesterday by County Agent
Louis II. Alsmeytr. the two being tak-
en from the two-acre orchard of A. J.
Burgu three miles north of Mission.
Although at this early stage of the
season the pink had come through the
skin and gave the fruit a very attrac-
tive appearance. Specimens of thev
fruit will he shown at the Valley Fair
in Harlingen this year Mr. Alsmeyer
said.
BURLARY CHARGE
'hriel Salsa was arrested yesterday
end pla ed in the county jail by Lieuten-
ant of Police Armstrong on a charge of
burglary and theft in connection with
the theft of a battery from a ear in
front f the Miller Hotel. According to
the complaint Salsa i« charged with tuk
ing other articles. A search of Salsa's
residence it is stated to have revealed a
«using baseball huts and gloves and
other articles some of which were ideo-

GET LEGION MEET
Whether the Brownsville post of the
American Legion will petition to have
the 15)25 state convention here will be
decided at a meeting of the Legion to
be held in the near future said 1* st

It is likely that the legion will ask !
for the convention of 15*2*>. in the hope 1
that hotel f icilities here may be liet- j
t *r for the handling of the state con-
vention by that time.
Several of the legion posts up the j
Delta have given their endorsement to

the next convention although at the
meeting of the local legion held i
last week it was pointed out that |
Brownsville may not be able to handle
the Legionnaires.
The delegates from the local post to
the state convention which will meet

W. S. SUTTON OIKS
News has been received in Browns-
ville of the death at San Antonio on
August 10 of W. S. Sutton who wa
manager of the Walker- Bi nnett Whole-
sale Dry floods company of this city
several years ago. Mr. Sutton was sit
ting in h.s automobile at the time
death coming suddenly. lie had not
been in good health for some years.
He is survived by his widow anil two
children.

Two Men Are Fined
