Fifth Successive Defeat
Indicates Collapse;
Senators Lose
NEW YORK N. Y„ Aug. 22.—Beaten
in five successive games the Phila-
delphia Athletics today were on the
■verge of a total collapse such as wreck-
ed early season hopes for -Connie Mack
in previous years.
Defeat of the youthful Quaker City
combination yesterday by the Chicago
White Sox 8 to 2 bore unmistakable
signs of cvacking on the part of Mack’s
entry. Pitchers were wild and inefect-
ive against Collins club team hitting
continued weak while the defense was
unsteady at crucial periods. Sheely was
the big gun in the Sox attack with three
singles and a double.
The tumble of Philadelphia however
. lost the club no further ground in the
■ American league race. Washington one
game in the lead likewise went down to
defeat at the hands of Detroit as Co-
velskie lost an eleven inning pitching
duel to Whitehill to the Tigers 1 to 0.
The reverse carried a double blow for
the Senators who also lost their veteran
first baseman Joe Judge. Concussion
of the brain resulting from a blow on
the head from a pitched ball put Judge
in a hospital.
In spite of the absence of their leader
Tris Speaker who is out of the game as
a result of being 9truck on the arm the
Indians put over a 2 to 1 victory against
the Yankes yesterday. Jamieson scored
• both runs for Cleveland on hits by Sum-
ma.
Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Browns
matched long clouts in a game at St.
Louis with the home siege guns out
distancing the Hub artillery 9 to 7.
Rice Boone and Todt made homers.
All the National league games were
postponed on account of rain compell-
ing New York and Pittsburgh to sched-
ple a brace of double headers today and
tomorrow in their struggle for leader-
ship. A fifth game at the Polo grounds
will be played Monday.

Reduction in Movement
Seen by Department
of Agriculture
mm i—^
fBv the Assbciated Press)
WASHINGTON D. C. Aug. 22.—The
department of agriculture estimated to-
day that 250.000 fewer cattle will be1
marketed from the range country this
fall than last fall with the principal re-
duction in the Southwest. The num-
ber for market is placed at 4077000
head compared with 4322000 last fall
| and 4.2o8000 in the fall of 1923.
I The movement from the Southwest is ^
estimated at 1847000 head compared
with 2.117000 in 1923 and 2041000 in
1924. Because of dry weather move- !
ment from the Southwest frof January
to July has been very heavy with a
I considerable increase . from Texas. Ok-
' lahoma marketed 323000 during this
time compared with 226.000 in the sdme
period in 1924. In New Mexico a rec-
ord number 254000 head were moved
in the first seven months compared with
164000 in the same period last year and .
! a six year average of 166000.
I Feed conditions over the range coun- j
try are generally very good except in |
the Southwest. All states west of the
continental divide and Wyoming have i
much better feed and hay crops than
last year. In Montana. Colorado and
North Dakota and the Western sections
of South Dakota and Nebraska the hay
and feed crops are not so heavy as last
year but there is ample supply for range
stock.
Early indications are that the feeder
cattle demand will be strong. During
I July prices on feeders and stocker
steers shipped from Chicago were high-
er than during July 1924. Recent sales
of heavy well finished cattle have
shown top prices.
