CAMP GRANT 111. Sept. 3.—Once a
general now a private. This in brief
is the^extraordinary story of Basil
Teheslavsky.
It didn’t happen in one of the re-
publics where revolutions arc caTy ap-
petizers.
Before the revolution in Russia
Teheslavsky was a major general and
a division commander. He was on the
stall' of Grand Duke Nicholas brother
of the czar and commander-ii.-c’nef of
the Russian armies in the campaign in
which the Russians won their only
battles from the Germans.
When ihe monarchy fell Teheslavsky
a commoner was offered his choice of a
command in the Red army or exile. He
chose the latter expecting tj»e Ref's
to be defeated. He drifted ai'ound Eur-
ope and finally came to the United
States. Now he is a mechanic in Chi
cago.
The old love of army life led him to
join the 122nd Field Artilledy Illinois
National Guard as a private. He is
now training herewith that unit.
He hopes to be an officer in the Am-
American uniform paying:
“Avgood soldier he listen he talk.
Wait till I get—vot vou call dem —de
eagles. ”
He hopes to be a nofficer in the Am-
erican army some day.
Japanese Issue Edict
Against Short Skirts
TOKYO/Sept. 8.—Thin skirts and
short ones may be all right for Western
women but the Metropolitan Police
Board has issued an order prohibiting
the Japanese fair sex from wearing
abbrevated or filmy garments in public.
The police order* which is being at-
tacked editorially by some - of the Ver-
nacular newspapers warns any Jap-
anese women—and especially geisha
girls—that they will not be permitted
to ape|1fc- publicly unless fully clothed
•■in garments of the most modest style"
which “do not expose the limbs un-
necessarily" and which are of " suf-
ficient thickness." The .police order
however does not affect the styles
adopted by foreign women in Japan.
