KAPLAN WINS
FROM HERMAN
/_•
F eather weight Ch a m p
Retains Title Before
14000 in New York
( Ry the Associated Press!
NEW YORK N. Y. Dec. 19.—Louis
(Kid) Kaplan’s hold on the world's fea-
therweight ring title was more secuie
today as the result of a convincing de-
cision over his persistent challenger
the erstwhile Californian Babe Her-
man last night before 14000 spectators
in Madison Square Garden.
In spite of the fact that Kaplan’s
second defense V>f his title within Pour
months against hi? most dangerous fo^
was marked by frequent clinching and
wrestling the contest at least cleared
the atmosphere of doubt which pre-
vailed after their first title contest :ast
August at Waterbury Conn.
The draw verdict given the Meriden
Conn. titleholder after 15 hard fougni
rounds in that bout was received with
almost unanimous disapproval by vot-
ing newspapermen who considered that
Herman was clearly entitled to the ver-
dict and the championship.
Kaplan’s aggressive offensive iisc
night won him eleven of the fifteen
rounds while but two were carried by
Herman with the remaining tpro
rounds adjudged even.
Herman was in steady retreat before
the attack of the champion except in
the tenth and fourteenth when he ral-
lied with stinging right hand drives *o
the face. Twice he took acrobatic
plunges to the'canvas once in the tenth
when he stumbled and again in the fif-
teenth when h*» dived to the floor to
avoid a swing.
The bout was devoid of spectacular
features which had colored their six
previous encounters four of which took
place prior to Kaplan’s winning of th*
126 pound title. The mauling and
clinching accounted for considerable1
punishment however and both men
bled at the close Kaplan from one ear
and Herman from cuts over his right
eye.
TRIP PROVES TRAGIC
MEXICO CITY—A trip from Italy to
visit the palace of Fernando Cortes
an ancestor had tragic results for
Prince de Pignatelli. The princess was
killed and the prince was hurt in a mo-
tor accident.
HAYNES TO BE IN DIRECTORY
WASHINGTON—The name of Roy A. j
Haynes will appear in the next issue of
the congressional directory but there
is a deep mystery as to who caused its
exclusion from the present number by
marking it out on a proof quite dis-
tinctly. *
SOLON CALLED ANGEL
WASHINGTON—“An angel witl/four
wings” is Representative Howard of
Nebraska. At least he says Represen-
tative Upshaw of Georgia so character-
ized him at a birthday party. The con-
gressional record by unanimous con-
sent will give all the details.
