The state of New York has its first
woman sheriff. She is Mrs. Clara
Cage! Senecal. of Plzttsburg. and
was appointed by Governor At Smith
to succeed her husband Eli Senecal
who died recently.
Mis. Senecal went to Plattsburg
to live when she was Miss Clara Ca-

in 1K1*5. Her husband rose from the
ranks to the office of acting chief
Mrs. Clara C. Senecal
an«l lalcr to chief of police of Platts
burg. At the election last November
he was elected sheriff on the liemo-
cratic t cket with a majority al-
though the county is normally a Re-
publican stronghold.
l>ur.ng her husband’s incumbency
as sheriff Mrs. Senecal was matron
of the Clinton county jail. Just a
few clays before hi* death after a
three year's illness Sheriff Senecal
wrote Governor Smith asking the*
his wife be given the appointment
to finish his term after his death.
Many citizens of Clinton county also
wiote the governor asking that she
be given the appointment.
Mrs. Senecal is a trifle over 50
years of age. She declares she will
appoint as deputy sher ffs and oth-
er officials connected with the office
men of ability and strict integrity
and that she will assume active
charge of the office after taking the
constitutional oath and will devote
her entire time and energy to make
her administration a success.
The National Association of
Women Painters and Sculptors has
just elected Mrs. Mabel Conklin
noted sculptor president.
This is the first time in the his-

And Mrs. Conklin has another dis-
tinction. She is the first* grand-
mother ever to head the women
painters and sculptors.
Last summer Mrs. Kenneth Pease
of Nantucket Mass. lost her wrist
watch down on the harbor beach.
After a long search it was given up
as last. Recently her husband
cleaned his truck and down in the
gearshift he found his wife's watch.
