KID PANCHO *
WE FIGHT
• ON; ill
Winner of Headliner
. On Fistic Card At
Ft. Brown Monday
To Be Challenged
It has been definitely derided that
Kid Pancho the well known San An-
tonio boxer will fight in Browns-
viile on the night of Tuesday June
M. against the winner of the Johnny
Hughes.Kid Suarez bout which is to
•e held in the open air arena at
*ort Brown Monday night the pro-
moters say.
* Poncho has agreed to be present
tl the fight Monday night and chal-
lenge the winner. Hughes and S-uarez
have agreed that the winner will
fight Pancho. Heretofore the fight
Pancho and the winner of
the Hughes-Suarez bout was only
tentative.
Pancho has been fn the city train-
ing and also working the fat off
acme other scrapper* sojourning in
Brownsville.
a Those fans who have watched
Workouts at the athletic club at
Fort Brown are inclined to think that
Wughes is going to run uj» against
a "tough customer.” in the person
of Suarez who showed lots of stuff.
Two-Flated Fight er
Suarez is a two-handed fighter and
every punch he starts has a knock-
out in it if landed. His *tyle is more
like Jack Dempsey’s than any box-
er who has been seen in the ring ih
the South or West snys Al Edwards
of San Antonio his manager The
best hoy Suarez has met to date is
Kid Lercho of San Antonin over
Whom he won a newspaper derision.
Raving Lencho on the floor several
times once for the count of nine cut
■hort hy the hell.
Suarez is n sensational fighter and
one of the hardest punchers San An-
tonio fans have ever seen In ac-
tion.
After his recent loss at Weslaco.
Hughes is striving to get into good
khape for the Suarez bout. He was
not so badly beaten at Weslaco by
David Veslaco as some would have
it and the headliner at Fort Brown
tomorrow night promisee to be any-
thing except a one-sided affair.
Suarez and Hughes are echeduled to
go ten rounds.
The curtain raiser will see another
good pair of scrappers go into ac-
tion. The battlers urc Johnny Truz
nnd Kid Monterrey who will fight
eight rounds unless one or the other
gets a knockout.
t ruz Risen FhI
Cruz is another of A1 Edwards’
boys and has climbed from the ranks
ut the four-round hoys to a head-
liner on San Antonio cards in the
short period of six months. His two
furious fights with Gonzalo Rubio of
•Mexico City in San Antonio in past
months have rained him a large fol-
lowing in the Alamo city. Rubio is
regarded as the flyweight champion
of Mexico.
Kid Monterrey earned himself a
plare on the card by holding his own
with Hughes in a ten-round unof-
ficial battle.
There is mu-h personal interest in
the mix-round bout between Frank
Pompa and Kid Hernandez. The in-
terest is centered in Pompa because
he is the brother of the popular
catcher Jesus Pompa. with Browns-
ville last year.
Barrientor and Joe Medina will go
six rounds and Pepper and Silver of
Fort Brown are scheduled for the
«ame number of rounds.
Alvaro Alvarez and Robert Alvaro
■re due to go four rounds.
Open Air Arena
The bouts are to be held in an
open air arena on the “island” in
Fort Brown. Sufficient illumination
will be provided to get to the arena
and park. The seating capacity is
between 700 and *00 and the ticket
■ale has been good.
Sailor Haines will be the referee
The Twelfth Cavalry band is to
provide music during the fights.
A special bus is to be run up the
Valley after the fights for the ben-
efit of out-of-town fans.
It Is announced that the onlv posts
in the arena will be three inch iron
corner posts in the ring and that

Burns and big Jim St. Clair for the
heavyweight championship of the !
southwest only a few hours off both |
men claim to be in perfect con-
dition for a grueling battle. They
are scheduled for 15 rounds-
St. Clair has trained for his fight
in McAllen and has won a large
crowd of followers who believe him
unbeatable. Jim is a clean boxer
and a gentleman and has won the ad-
miration of every one whom he has j
met. Manager T. |E. Colbert who
brought the big boy down here orig-j
inaliy to meet Jack Sullivan says:!
“Jim is in good shape and will have
no excuse to offer if he should be
beaten. We think Burns is a tough
man. but We expect to win. *t. Clair '
can take all Burns has to offer and
can punch with the best heavies in
the ring. Jim is in wonderful con-
dition and we are ready for the
bell.'’
Hums Cagey Fighter
“California Jack” Burns is a cagey
fighter himself. Fans down here have
never yet seen the big coast battler
extended. But his sparring partners
those human “shock absorbers" who
make a living “catching" for the
main eventers when in training all
say that “California Jack" is a great
man and will dispose of any of the
heavyweights in the Southwest.
Burns himself says that he will step
into the ring w ith Jim St. Clair ready
for what comes and expects to pick
him off before the full distance has
been covered.
The biggest crowd that has ever
attended a sporting event in this
part of the Valley is expected. Kes- j
ervations indicate that theheavy-

ordinary attention.
Ken Mary Harlingen feather-

lad from New York in the eight-
round semi-windup is in good eon- |

the same management as Jim St-
C4uir. and has worked hard for the
Valley boy.

acted to be interesting. Leach claims
he can beat Strong although they

anxious to fight off the tie.
