REVISION OF
RATESOUGHT
Steamship Lines Oper-
ating to Houston
Ask Change
HOUSTON To***. Sept IS.—(F— ‘
C E Holloman transportation man-
ager of the Houston Chamber of
Commerce brings the news back
from New York that steamship com-
panies operating between Houston
sod Atlantic porta likely will ask
the Interstate Commerce Comm s-
stoo to revise its recently consoli-
dated Southern rote case in order to
permit the unrestricted movement
of commodities from the Atl-ntic;
soaboard to Gulf ports.
He found ho said on his New
York visit in connection with the
matter that soma steamship com-
panies were not satisfied with the |
new scales even though the water
rat* on certain commodities would
bo trcroosod. These companies he
said have found that complication
with railroad rates probably atU de-
mand action to protect commodity
movement *hroagh the ports.
The railroads themselves. Mr. Hol-
loman said hav# discovered wide dis-
crepancies. If the rates are pub-
lished strictly according to the or-
der which is duo to go into effort
December 5. sot..* rates from Cali-
fornia to the East will bo cheaper
than from Texas to the East. In
some ether cases rates from points
east of the Mississippi river to
points west of that stream will be
lower than from same points east
of the river to points in the river■
itself.
