recent match at Wimbledon; next,
the U.S. Open.
NEXT WEEK: A pre-season look at
the Leopardettes.
Jimmy Connors (left) drills a serve

against John McEnroe (above) in
Dallas last May. “I would have hated
Swedish tennis star Bjorn Borg will attempt to nab the elusive U.S. Open title.
His major obstacles appear to be Americans Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe,
but they may not get a chance at him should his ailing knee fail him as it did
August 17 at the Players International Tennis Championships in Toronto, Canada.
After making the finals of the tournament, Borg defaulted to young
Czechoslovakain star Ivan Lendl.
Speaking of the top American duo the two seem to be fueling quite a rivalry.
Perhaps the initial spark began at the World Championship of Tennis Tournament
in Dallas last May when Connors rebounded from a slow start to trounce McEnroe
2-6, 7-6, 6-1, 6-1. Since then, they have split two matches, with “Junior’s” victory
at Wimbledon featuring some hearty finger-shaking and a few harsh words.

Houston newcomer Ken Stabler seems to be adapting to his Columbia blue
outfit very well although the Oilers are 1-2 in pre-season play. Thus far, the Snake
has nailed 47 of 75 passes for 541 yards. His 63 percent completion rate is tops in
the N.F.L. after three weeks at the helm in Houston.
In Dallas, Danny White is also having to do some adapting, having played so
little under Roger Staubach. Although White was upstaged by Glenn Carano in
their most recent outing against Houston, he remains the Cowboy’s top choice at
quarterback. Through his first three games, White has hit 23 of 41 passes for a
solid 56 percent.

Success, according to Scott, will
depend on teamwork. “We will not have
any superstars, but if everyone works
together, we will have a very solid team. ’ ’
“Naturally, the first practices will
concentrate on fundamentals, condition-
ing, and disipline. If we master these
early,” Scott remarked, “the team play
will take care of itself.”
“Of course, it is hard to say this early
just what each player can do, but I’m
expecting a lot out of my recruits as well
as my returning lettermen. If everyone
does his job, we may well be at the top in
the conference race,’’Scott concluded.

Although it will be another couple of
weeks before supervised practice begins
for the Temple Junior College Leopards,
it is apparent that the Leopards may have
the ability to challenge early favorites San
Jacinto and Blinn for the Texas Junior
College Athletic Conference basketball
title.
Last year, the Leopards posted 12
victories against 18 defeats, but 25 of the
30 games were decided in the last two
minutes of play.
“We simply were not able to gain the
necessary momentum when we really
needed it,” explained head basketball
coach Danny Scott.
“In college ball, everybody can score,
but momentum dictates how much at a
given time. It is really important.”
Returning to the team from last season
are can Dandy McClure, Robert
Stephens, Louis Escalante, Ronnie Lon-
goria, Anthony Wesley, Dirk Field, and
Mike McCain. Scott said that he hopes
his eight sophomores—seven of whom
earned letters—will bring stability and
consistancy for the new recruits.
Newcomers include Kevin Cunning-
ham, an “All Greater-Houston” player
from Houston Westchester High School;
Cato Hardy, who along with Kevin Smith,
made the “All San Antonio Team” while
playing for Southwest and Churchill,
respectively. Marc Chllcoat, an “All
District” player from Victoria; Dean
McQuire, who was named “All South
Plains Player of the Year” for his
accomplishments at Abernathy, and Mike
Moreau, another “All District” player
who hails from Houston Northbrook.
Also, Freshmen Matt Jones and Willie
dark, from Buckholts and San Antonio
Memorial, ire expected to join the team
as the practices begin.
Astro pitcher J. R. Richard is said to be resting comfortably and improving
quickly in a Houston hospital after undergoing emergency surgery July 30 to
remove a bloodclot.
Five days earlier, Richard was released from a medical center after a series of
intensive tests which revealed “a curculatory problem.”
Many say, however, that should he return to the majors in full strenght, he will
become an even better pitcher because much of his velocity will be lost.
Such an occurance would encourage the development of a variety of offspeed
pitches for a well-rounded arsenal—something he had lacked.
