The equal right of every American
to receive and propagate information
is what makes this country different
from every other nation, Journalism
instructor John Gibson told a Temple
High School history class Wednesday.
Speaking to Connie McQueen’s
students, Gibson said that, although
Americans have always had to struggle
to keep the press free, and although
authoritarian forces sometimes gained
of the Constitution “shines like a pole
star so that we have been able to keep
our bearings, even, when the ‘ship of
state’ veers off course.”
He said that without the civil rights
that the Constitution guarantees,
Americans would “be in the same
boat” as i
where power and wealth
more than individual freedom.
? -
doesn’t cause desert-lke conditions.
Guillen cited the fact that there is i
than that at the tee boxes and greens.
When asked, Guillen remarked that a thorough watering system would
help, and that there had been talk of suh improvements although no actions
have been taken. ,
As one player put it: “They’ve done a heck of a job with what they ve got
to work with...”

Picture a quarterback dropping back in the pocket, finding an open
receiver, and firing a perfect strike to the numbers only to have the ball slide
out of the hands of his intended target. _
Now picture it nine times during the first half of play, with three of
those nine bounding in the air for an opponent to pick off.
This should give you a framed picture of the Houston Oilers throughout
the first and second quarters of their recent game against the Pittsburgh |
Steelers
No less than nine of Stabler’s darts were either dropped or batted about and
fell as incompletions or interceptions. The Snake finished the first halfwit
only nine completions in twenty attempts. The Oilers finished the first half
down 17-0. You just don’t win games that’ta way, fellas.
All the talk about having to adapt to the timing of different receivers (or
to a different quarterback, depending on how you look at it) really sounds
good-almost as good as the one about the ball coming from the different
side of the passer. Also, there’s the. story about the ball rotating in the
opposite direction. _
But all these tales do not cover up the plain fact: The receivers just
dropped the ball. Of course, pros aren’t suppose to-do that-especially on
national television, , , , ,
They’ll get another chance, however, when the Oilers face the Cleveland
Browns this Monday night and, believe me, Cosell will be watching intently
It will be interesting to see how Stabler and his crew of receivers (if he sti
claims them) will be treated should they pull a repeat performance.
It’s been said that lightning never strikes the same place twice. I hope that
applies to passcatchers, too; the Oilers will be burnt crisp if it doesnt.

Called by one player a “duffer’s delight,” the Temple Municipal Golf
Course offers a virtually wide open design for the weekend hacker.
“This course is very forgiving. I doesn’t dicourage you every time you
make a bad shot,” remarked a Municipal regular.
Temple Municipal Pro Paul Guillen admits that there are nearby
country clubs that have better layouts with more sandtraps and water, but
reasons that are the Municipal’s centralized location and lower green fees
play an important role in luring golfers to the course.
“The course is easily accessible from anywhere in or
we do offer very reasonable green fees,” Guillen said.
Temple Municipal, which sits entirely on land owned by Temple Junior
College and leased to the city of Temple for a token sum of one dollar per
year, has undergone quite a few changes recently.
Last fall, the old number seven and eight holes that ran north and south
beside the current fifth hole, were moved northward and ran east and west,
lengthwise.
The change, according to Guillen, was to make room for possible vo-tech
and nursing buildings that are to be erected by TJC.
Since then, the number seven and nine holes have been reversed, to form
I the course as it is now. t
I “It’s a short course —only about 5500 yards,” Guillen stated, but it still
I offers a challenge to the average golfer.”
I Perhaps the main criticism directed at the course is the barren fairways.
I Granted, the weather has been miserable, but one summer’s bad dryness
no underground watering system other
