“Brass Tacks” on the Sunday School Lesson
I By ALVIN K. BELL.
The new* of Jesus’ increasing
popularity and the tame he had
achieved in Galilee as tne resulf oi
Jus two year* of teaching and healing
had reached Jerusalem and created
such a sensation that the religious
leaders sent a deputation of scribes
end Phartses to investigate and re-
port back to the tenipie authorities.
Now when this deputation conies to
Jesus will its members concern
themselves with the marvelous truths
Jesus ha* taught or with his*mighty
werks of healing such as stilling the
tempest casting out demons heating
the sick or multiplying the ioave*

wilderness ?
An Eye for Trifles
No! None of these worthwhile
things concerned them. They had
eyes only for trifles. “And when
they saw some of his disciples eat
bread with defiled that is to say
with unwashen. haml« they found
fault." They had conic to find noth-
ing hut fault and folks always find
what they are looking for. It counted
^ for nothing that thousands had been
• ed on bread divinely created in his
hands. Their wbcle concern wan
that the multitudes had not bon
required to go through their pre-
* scribed ceremonies of washing their
l*ends before eating the bread. They
were blind as bats to the things of
eternal truth but they had eye* hke
hunierds for infractions of their in*
signficant tradition*. Very minute

1t leans-e their hands with the water
running new off the elbow and now
off the tips of the fingers. This pro-
cedure was to them the heart of re-
l.gion because religion with them
■ never reached the heart but spent
itself in trifling external*.
Religious Versus Ritualism.
Against this empty ceremonialism
which was merely a going through
the motions of religion. Jesus spoke
these word* of withering denuncia-
tion: “Well did Isaiah prophesy of
( you hyprocrites as it is written This
1 people honoreth me with their lips.
>nt their heart is far from me. . . .
. ye leave the emmen jnient of God
tn<i hold fast the tradition of men.”
He cited r.s illustration of the
j fruits of their heartless religion
their setting aside God's law on hon-
oring parent* and substituting their
j traditions which permitted a son to
'set iisidr G« d’s law and neglect his
i parents by saying thnt all his prop-
c ty was “corban." that is dedicated
to God This their religion schemed
to beat God’s law and hardened chil-
dren’* hearts against their needy
parent*. To hide such villainies they
made much ado about such nothings
as band-washings.
The Eternal Principle Involved
After launching this broadside rf
withering sarcasm against his fault-
finding crit'cs. Jesus turned to th"
more teachable multitude* and laid
down a guiding principle for all age
in such natters: "There is nothing
fit.:i without the man. that going
