Grower In Florida
Produce® New Lemon
■
WALDO. Fla. May 23.—Co-operat-
ing with the United States depart-
ment of agriculture T. K. Godby of
this city is developing a lemon
which has all the essential charac-
i teristics of a good commercial va-
riety according to well informed
I horticulturists. While the trees from
the last round of hia experiment
; have not yet attained * size suffi-
j cient to standardize its yieid amnle
evidence is at hand to warrant
i plantings on a much larger realc.
His last buddings were on trifoliate
j root stock which has proved the best
under Florida conditions. The va-
riety is known as the Myer lemon
and the parent tree was brought from
Northern China several years ago.
While green in color when mature
i the fruit is said to be a third larger
! than the Italian lemon and differs
from the native Florida fruit in that
| it has an exceptionally smooth skin
and as thin as that of a tangerine.
During his 47 years of farming
here Mr. Godby ha.s developed a
number of new varieties of fruits
flowers and plants. Among his
products now in general use is the
j Triumph sweet potato a rust and
I rot proof variety now planted ex-
| ttnsively in the Virginias and a new
variety of W isteria.
