4-CENT GAS
TAXJOUGHT
Administration Forces Also
'Would Lower License
Fees One-Third
By RAYMOND BROOKS
AUSTIN April 23.—Gov. Dan
Moody’s administration leaders will
ask for a four-cent state gasoline
sales tax and will offer a one-third
reduction in the license fees of pas-
senger cars it was revealed early in
the new session.
T’ljfc't will undertake in this waj
to more money for highwaj
construction than is now provided
and to cut down the heavy share ol
license fees which go to counties
having large cities. Four counties
now are said to get about one-fifth
of all the county license fees.
Rep. R. M. Hubbard who led the
unsuccessful fight for the state bond
issue will sponsor the administra-
tion program in the house it was
learned.
His measure is expected to give
eounties the first 15 per cent of the
lowered license fees and 6mall per
centages on the graded license fees
above this amount so as to make
the counties share more equally.
According to Rep. Leonard Til-
lotson of Sealy a four-cent gasoline
tax beginning May 1. would bring
the state about $18000000 for high-
ways this year. Other highway rev-
enues would bring the amount tc
around $33000000 a year now anc
the continued four-cent rate aftei
the license fees have been reduced
would annually increase the highwaj
revenue until above $40000000 s
year would be provided. This would
include money paid in by counties
on state roads and federal air. and
the highway department’s share ol
the motor license fees. Tillotsor
has a bill which differs materiallj
from the administration plan in di-
viding revenues he said.
