TWO’S A CROWD
• • • • • *
So Illinois Congresswoman \\ ould Elimi-
nate Deneen

By F. J. CIPRIANI
(Central Staff Writer.)
CHICAGO Oct. 11.—Two’s a
crowd when it comes to getting a
job constitutionally meant for one
and from now on the task of
shoving Charles S. Deneen off his
• senatorial seat belongs mainly to
Ruth Hanna McCormick.
And if anybody can jostle that
suave ex-governor of Illinois from
his Washington perch it is this
daughter of an Illustrious Ohioan
the famed “maker of presidents.”
She has the indelible mark of Han-
na in her blood. Senatorial life
has been hers since the hey-day of
I the late Senator Mart Hanna and
was ended only with the defeat in
1924 of her husband the late Sen-
ator Medill McCormick.
Two’s a Crowd
The Illinois office is available
only to one. Congresswoman Mc-
1 Cormick wants it so does Senator
Deneen and one or the other not
1 forgetting several more aspirants
must be eliminated. Thus it is that
two’s too many and Mrs. McCor-
mick doesn’t propose to be crowded.
She announced her candidacy for j
the Republican nomination against
Deneen the other night and at the
same time declared her campaign
would be ‘bunkless.” Nor does she
intend to make a “frill and frock”
appeal to her sex. She insists her
; political fight is not a feminist
| movement. Mrs. McCormick un-
doubtedly will be a most formid-
able foe for the senatorial incum-
bent despite* the sentiment in
Southern Illinois which is expressed
in the nrovincial words of a down-
stater thusly “We won’t vote fer
no skirt.”
A Real Vote-Getter
Mrs. McCormick is a vote-getter
and received 1.711.651 xrtos in her
successful bid for congressman-at-
large last year. This remarkable
showing has r.c I been overlooked
•
rr.r— - .—v
by Senator Dent 0\ or Lieut. Govern-
or Fred E. Sterling and former At-
torney General Leonard J. Brund-
age the latter two a pair of poten-
tial condidates.
Illinois is keenly interested in Mrs.
McCormicks’s efforts and it would
not be strange if this state which
has produced everything from Her-
rin riots to Abraham Linco^- should
send a woman to the senat/ t ul halls
of congress. f
Czechs Produce More
Cars to Keep Trade
PRAGUE Oct. 11.—f/P>—Czecho-
slovakia which is flooded with
American cars is not putting up
tariff barriers to meet American
competition. She is modernizing her
automobile plants and putting In
new machines which would produce
100 cars a day.
Germany is the best customer of
Czecho-Slovakia after the United
States. Although duty on German
cars is lower than that on Ameri-
can cars yet American machines
are in favor not only because they
sell cheaper but also of their en-
durance power.
Eighteen per cent of the cars im-
ported this year are Americans as
compared with 73 per cent last year.
The falling off of imports is due
to the great increase in domestic
Czecho-Slovak manufacturing pro-
duction.
REPORT BANDITS SACK
TOWN ABDUCT MAYOR
MEXICO CITY Oct. II.—(JP)—A
disnatch to La Prensa from Guada-
laiara says bandits dressed as sol-
diers sacked the village of El Cas-
tillo. Jalisco killed a peon and ab-
ducted the mayor and J. Calder-
son a priest. Troops pursued the
bandits who abandoned their pris-
oners in the flight.
