PRINTERS HAUNT
♦ * *
CALIFORNIA WA\
ODESSA Oct. 28.— (A*l —Al-
though the day of the tramp
printer is almost gone towns
along the Bankhead highway on
the southern route to California
still get occasional visits from
these odd fellows when they
make their trips south for the
winter. One of the most fa-
mous of the vagabond masters of
the stick and case "Weary Wil-
lie” Waterhouse of Walla Walla
Wash. comes through this part
of the country almost every year.
Old broken blearv-eyed and
bent. "Weary Willie” shuffles
along catching rides from town
i to town stopping occasionally for
a day or so to help out in a
country print shop. He travels
yearly from coast to coast. He
usually gets work and seems to
make enough for more than an
ordinary living. He doesn't want
a permanent job and even re-
fuses one when it is offered. Al-
though well past sixty. Willie con-
tinues his wanderings and says
he will until the end.
He is one of the last of a fa-
mous crew who were the boon of
the country print-shop in the oid
days before the advent of the
mechanical typesetting machines.
