RUSS-CHINESE
TENSION EASES
Peaceful Settlement Still
Obscure But Guns
Are Silent
(By the Associated Press.)
Absence of reports of fresh con-
flict in wintry Northwest Manchu-
ria yesterday further lightened the
tension between Russia and China
which had occupied world attention
since the opening of thew eek when
the Soviet army was in full drive.
However the course of peaceful
negotiations for settlement of the
long standing dispute over the Chi-
nese Eastern Railway was still ob-
scure. Moscow had reported the
acceptance by the Mukden provin-
cial government of its demands pre-
liminary to » conference and alsc
made known its rejection of pre-
conference stipulations by Nanking.
Foreign Secretary’ C. T. Wang was
emphatic in saving there had been
no break between Mukden and
Nanking. Whatever negotiations
had been conducted with the Rus-
sians he said had been with the
authorization of the Nanking gov-
ernment as preliminaries to for-
mal negotiations.
The Chinese armiej. apparently i
driven 100 miles or more back from
the western frontier seemed to
have maintained their positions and
Chinese sources said that Mongol!- i
an tribal chiefs had agreed to send
30.000 soldiers to Manchuria to bol- j
cter the defense.
Suggestions of international inter- !
vention in the dispute which had
been made early in the week were
held in abevance pending develop-
ments and ihe opinion in Welling-
ton was that the two nations in- ;
volved might be expected to find
their own solution.
