Books can not feel. One suspects that the nazis who are engag-
ed in establishing their superior civilization in Austria find more
congenial employment in the mass boycott of Jewish stores, which
has taken the delicately ironical turn of forcing Jew's to carry boy-
cott placards. According to an Associated Press dispatch from
Vienna, one old man fainted twice w'hile holding an anti-Jewish
placard aloft, each time being revived with k dash of cold water in
his face and forced to continue. Burning hooks must be dull sport
compared to such lively demonstration of Aryan superiority.—Gal-
veston News.

books whose authors the nazis disliked were flung on bonfires.
Storm troopers decided what the German people should be allowed
to read, and there was no appeal from their decision.
The world loked on in shocked contempt, at first regarding
the exhibition as an outburst of fanaticism which presently would
subside. But it was more than that ;' it was part of a deliberately
conceived plan to shackle the intelligence of a people.
On the heels of Hitler’s army, nazi culture has entered Austria
and is proceeding to make that country a fit intellectual abode for
Germans. Book burning has begun in Vienna, amcient center of
learning and art. Stocks of book stores have been purged. The
chief librarian of Vienna’s magnificent public library has been given
a list of books which must be taken from the 1,200,000-volume col-
lection and burned. Nazi, censors are snooping through private
libraries.
No doubt some valuable items will be destroyed, and the intel-
lectual life of Austria will be impoverished as it has been in Ger-,
many. But in a country where thinking is a crime depriving the
people of books which remind them of past freedom may ease the
acceptance of their lot. There is no danger, of course, that this
