When Marco Polo burst into
Ahmed’s apartment the wedding
ceremony was already In progress.
He made a lunge for Ahmed, and a
fierce, breathless battle followed be-
between the two men. Ahmed was
armed with a dagger, but Marco
was swifter and stronger. At the
edge of the trap door, through
which Ahmed had sent many an In-
nocent victim to his death, Marco
overpowered the Saracen. Ahmed
plunged through It with a grim
smile on hia face.
Marco Polo escorted Kaidu and
his officers through the Palace into
the Throne Room. Kublal Khan
rose and came forward, saying:
“We beg to welcome you, our be-
loved cousin. Lord Kaidu. We un-
derstand you and your people have
been the victims of injustice. The
cause of that has been removed and
it .will never be repeated.”
At a Signal from the Majordomo,

For days the Palace had been in
an uproar of preparation. The beau-
tiful gardens were gay with lan-
terns. In the Royal kitchens, the
royal chefs were busy preparing
delicacies fit for the palates of
kings and queens. Word had been
sent to Chen T.u, the chemist, to
make a large quantity of firepow-

was to be married that day to the
Princes Kukachin. It was while the

Marco Polo had squeezed through
the Palace gate just before it closed.
Making his way carefully along the
wall, he found Chen T.u, and saw
that the chemist had followed his
instructions to the letter. An inno-
cent-looking horse and cart, laden
with large boxes of gunpowder,
stood in front of the Palace gate.
Marco made a hole in the lower
corner of a box and the powder be-
gan to pour out. Then he struck the
horse on the rump. It reared and
plunged up the street, leaving a
trail of powder from the punctured
box. Chen Tsu led Marco through
a secret stairway in the wall to
Kaidu.
“Kaidu!" cried Marco breathless-
ly, "We must attack now!”
"Attack?” screamed Kaidu. "With

beginning the fall term. Captain
Schauer Ls author of a text book on
