There seems to be a strewing sentiment among congressmen in
favor of a return to fiscal sanity on the part of federal government.
it is hoped that this may mean tile end of unbalanced budgets,
and the establishment of a definite program for retiring our moun-
tainohs public, debt.
If the next Congress follows the example of the last few. a'nd
throws all caution Io the winds in voting appropriations, it will
find that the recovery movement now underway will be shortlived
But if it shows regard for the realities of government finance, it
will do as much as anything could to keep the movement going and
gaining.

Wifh public interest brought to focus by proclamations issued
by President Roosevelt, thirty-seven governors and many muni-
cipal officials, citing the importance of Fire Prevention Week last
month, people are at least awakening to the dollar and cents value
of curtailing fire losses. <lenuliU“ enthusiasm is evident in the cam-
paigns for safety, waged by communities in all sections.
Some idea of the great interest ami cooperation in the effort
to prevent fires niay- be gained from a summary of the quantities
of literature requested of by just one public service organization—
the National Board <‘>f Fire Vndervvriters.
Reprints of advertisements appearing in national magazines
totaled 150,000. Posters to the lune of 221,000 and 1,'>00,000 stick-
ers were put tiT work in area's from coast to roast. Fire .chiefs' en-
deavored to have every home inspected, as well as other buildings.
To this end. 227,000 self-inspection blanks for homes, mercantile
and industrial establishments u-erc utilized'. Distribution of various
leaflets and text books totaled 450.000, including 30,000 playlets
requested by schools. A total of 3,850 advertisements a'nd news-
paper mats of daily fire prevention rules were used, while 600 •
Fire Chiefs were aided with suggestions for radio programs and
newspaper articles, ami metropolitan newspapers and thousands
of small town pirpers \yerc.helped with editorial material.
Most encouraging among all the fire reports of suc.eessful ac-
tivities is the expressed intention of many communities to continue
Fire Prevention as a year-round activity.
