CHRIST'S IDEAL OF
A CHRISTIAN LIFE
(Continued from previous page.)
care two pins what a man is. You can
be what you like for all that I care;
but I do care that I myself have the
spirit animating my life and that you
have the spirit animating your life.
For God's sake don't let us quarrel
about whether or not you can repeat
the apostles' creed! If you find help
In the Catholic church by all means
be a Catholic! If you want to attend
the Presbyterian church for God's sake
go to the Presbyterian church! If you
want to attend the Baptist church go
to the Baptist church! What have
I to do with that? But I think I have
something to do with my own spirit
and I do think that the spirit I
ought to have Is the spirit we call the
Christlike spirit If what you have
is the Christlike spirit then you have
it under many differing creeds. The
savage can have it under his idolatries.
The Mohammedan can have it under
his creed. We can all have It If we
will seek it I often think of Jesus and
of that extreme bitterness that he must
have felt He had done his best for
30 years. He had done his best and
the end of it was this that the minis-
ters of religion laughed at him that
the rabble on the street laughed at
him and that the Romans sneered at
him and that he was dying the most
painful death possible.
"My God! Why hast thou forsaken
me?" He thought he was alone and
God had gone and In his utter black-
ness he said: "Well I can't blame
them they don't understand."
mat Is the spirit I don't care wnat
you say about Jesus. That is the spirit
that is to save the world that spirit
alone.
Not to Be Served But to Serve.
What matters it If the Germans
haven't room to expand? If a German
comes here to America he gets his
opening. He makes a good citizen
he gives good service and we respect
him. But some people will say "He is lost
to me." When we take the "me" out
of it the selfishness out of it if he
serves his God here and If he serves
his fellows that Is all we need. We
have here every nationality under the
sun an Englishman on the platform
a Bohemian musician a Russian who
was to have taken part In the music.
I don't quarrel with my friend here
who played for us. We shake hands
and we serve together. I am not go-
ing to quarrel with htm because he Is
a Bohemian.. I am not going to
quarrel with" that man because he
is a Russian. Left alone the di-
vinitv of man will Join and will work
together and by and by we will say.
"I don't want my way. I don't want
my will. I came into this country
not to be served but to serve." If a
man does any -wrong we forgive him.
for he does not know what he Is do-
ing. God help us to learn that social
spirit! God help us all. so that before
long the assertive spirit may die. or
may be transformed to working on the
difficulties of life!
I don't know whether I have helped
you or not I have never dreaded a
service so much as this In all my life!
If you don't agree with me that doesn't
matter very much. If you desire more
the Christ spirit I am glad we have
met May we learn that spirit grad-
ually but surely.

4. SCRIPTURE.
S- 4-
I Peter 3:1-7.
The elders which are among you I
exhort who am also an elder and a
witness of the sufferings of Chri3t
and also a partaker of the glory 'hat
shall be revealed:
Feed the flock of God which is
among you. taking the oversight
thereof not by constraint but wlll-
inglv; not for filthy lucre but of a
ready mind:
Neither as being lords over God's
heritage but being ensamples to the
flock.
Ami when the chief Shepherd shall
appear ye shall receive a crown of
glory that fadeth not away.
Likewise ye younger submit your-
selves unto the elder. Yea all of you
be subject one to another and be
clothed with humility; for God le-
sisteth the proud and giveth grace
to the humble.
Humble yourselves therefore under
the mighty hand of God that he may
exalt you in due time:
Casting all your care upon him; for
he careth for you.
