A folk tradition has it that after An-
tiochus forbade the study of the Torah,
religious teachers would retire into the
forest with their disciples and there
give them instructions in Torah. As a
safeguard against imprisonment, they
took with them the four-sided Greek
astragaloi, the constant companion of the
Syrio-Greek gambling soldier. No sol-
dier coming upon them would doubt
that the Jewish students had gathered
for a lawful game of chance instead
of for the outlawed study of the great-
est Book in the world.

CHANUKAH OBSERVANCE
This year, Chanukah begins Sunday
Eve, November 29th and continues
through Monday, December 7th.
Chanukah is the festival of lights.
We celebrate it with joy and thanks-
giving. Beginning with one candle on
the first night, we kindle Chanukah
candles in our homes, increasing their
number each night by one until the last
night, when we kindle eight.
The Menorah is lit each evening soon
after sunset while people are still about
so that seeing the candles they may be
roused to renewed loyalty.
The Menorah should be placed in the
window, preferably at the left of the
doorway, opposite the Mezuzah.
Men, women and childrne may kindle
the Menorah. It is a good custom to
have a separate lamp for each member
of the family, so that each person may
light his own. This is particularly rec-
ommended for children.
On Friday night the Chanukah lights
are lit before the Sabbath candles. At
the conclusion of the Sabbath, the
Chanukah lamp is lit after Havdalah
WITH THE CANTOR
On Sunday, November 8th. Cantor &
Mrs. Irving Dean gave a concert for
the Hadassah organization in Galveston
at their annual Donor Dinner.
The symbols and ceremonies of the
25th of December, greet the Jewish
child in school and street, in the press
and over the radio.
Many are the Jewish homes in which
the Jewish light has given way to the
blaze of this non-Jewish observance.
Such substitution of its lights for the
light of the Chanukah Menorah is us-
ually only a beginning. As in the time
of Antiochus, the old slogan, “Let ah
be one people” is renewed.
Such self denunciation and denial of
faith leads as it always has, to the break-
down of the wall of spiritual protection,
which has been and is today our sole as-
surance of survival.
The 25th of Kislev, with its Jewish
observance in the synagogue and home,
offers the opportunity for rededication
to our own Jewish values, tradition and
ideals.
The. home, the religious school, the
synagogue, each is a battlefield where
we can win Jewish victories.
In each, we must light Chanukah
lights on spears of vigilance that Israel
may be rededicated. Like Mattisyohu,
we must highly resolve.
