'Some Fraud’ Indicated in Election of Senator Bankhead of Alabama
VOTING LAWS
SAID TO HAVE
BEEN VIOLATED
WASHINGTON Dec. l.—**>—On
findings of universal disregard for
•lection laws and circumstances
Indicating some fraud" Chairman
Hastings of the senate election
subcommittee today formally ques-
tioned the vahdity of the Alabama
election which sent John H. Bank-
head to the senate.
Argus Points
The republican senator from
Delaware laid a bulky factual re-
port without recommendations be-
fore his committee as it gathered
to permit counsel lor Bankhead
and the contestant former Senator
J. Thomas Heflin to argue disputed
points.
Outstanding conclusions of the
report were:
That violation* by election of-
ficials were the rule rather than
the exception and spread to every
voting place examined.
That on the basis of ballots tem-
porarily laid aside Hastings' work-
ers could not find that the election
result would be altered but other
questionable ballots might change
this.
Tlia* Bankhead spent SI.500 to
•2.500 more than permitted by the
Alabama law disqualifying candi-
date* with expenditures over $10-
000.
A Laws Violated
■That exclusion of all improperly
handled ballots would make deter-
mination of the wishes ol the Ala-
Iban.a majority impossible.
That among the law violations by
•feet ion officials were failure to |
MUnber the ballots in Ink; yilure
to roll and seal the ballots; break-
age of seals on baiiot boxes; voting
of absentees as much as ten years
out of the state; voting by persons
who did not pay their poll taxes
until long after the legally specified
time.
Indications so far have been that
Bankhead would be seated next1
week the contest coming up later.
