members of the William Cameron
Branch of the A. A. U. W. were guest*

abeth Cowglll on the occasion of
their regular monthly meeting held
Monday evening.
A atudy program on Mexico which
occupied the greater part of the
meeting embraced the story of the
“Conquest of Cortez and the Insti-
tution of Spanish Rule In Mexico.”
reviewed by Mrs. J E. McAnnally
and Miss Metha Scaief. K discus-
sion of the “Art and Architecture of
the Colonial Period.” was present-
ed by Mrs J. T. Cawlev.
During the short business meet-
ing preceding the program the club
voted to donate five dollars to the
Child Welfare Fund Announcement
was made of the antique exhibit to
be held on Feb. 23 and 24 at the
club house Just north of San Beni-
to. Miss Essie Roots chairman of
the beautification committee was
asked to take charge of the A. A.
U. W. exhibit.
Attention was called to the region-
al conference on "Cause and Cure
of War/’ which wiU be held in Dal-
las Feb 18 and 19. Members of oth-
er dubs as well as the members of
the A. A. U. W. are urged to attend
this conference

when the members of the "Mignon ’
dub met.
The members spent the early
evening In sewing and embroidering
later entering into a series of contests
In which Miss Angelita Cabaza re-
ceived a lovelv prize.

was given by Mrs. Harriet Taber
She reported that work comprising
the zone around the airport and on
Stenger street was practically com-
pleted.
An interesting feature of the meet-
ing was the drill given by Miss Doro-
thy Porter on parliamentary law.
Announcement of the quarterly ban-
quet of the Valley Federation of B.
P. W clubs was made by the Fed-
era tlcm president. Mrs. Mayme Cori-
don. An attendance of 100 percent
was urged of the local members.
Reservations for the banquet are In
charge of Dr. Jacobine Kruse and
Mrs. Isabella Seydler.

Women’* Culture club was held Wed-
• nesday afternoon in the home of
Mrs. Charles Barnes when a dis-
course on the “History of the Rio
Grande Valley." was given.
Judge Harbert Davenport of
Brownsville a recognized authority
on Valley and Texas History was in-
troduced to the club by Mrs. Ned
! C. Rlgsbee. Judge Davenport chose
as his address “Glimpses Along the
Old Military Road." and interspersed
his talk with comments on "Strong
Minded Ladies of the Road.” He
gave many romantic details of the
period before the Civil War. and
those following up to the present
time. He stressed the fact that in
the Valley there is still much history
in the making.
Mrs Frank Grlmsell gave a very
splendid report on "San Benito as
I First Saw It.M
During the business session the
members of the club voted to spon-
! sor a benefit bridge to be held March
9. the proceeds of which will be do-
nated to the city beautification work
In which the club has a most active
part.

venport of Brownsville and Mrs. W

the club will be held Feb. 27 In the

Mrs A. T. Benjamin wn* a gra-
cious hostess Wednesday evening
when she complimented her daugh-
ter Jean with a dinner party at
the Stonewall Jackson hotel. Ap-
pointments for the lovely affair de-
picted a color note of red and white.
The centerpiece for the table was
made of large red carnations inter-
mingled with clusters of white
daisies. Place cards for the feminine
members of the party were marked
with dainty corsages of daisies while
boutonnieres marked the places for
the oung men. Mlnniature palm
trees and cactus plants held interest-
i lng Valentines.
Following the delicious dinner the
guests assembled in the patio where
various games were enjoyed until a
late hour

commemorate the fourteenth birth-

church at Manitou. Colorado. The
ceremony was read by the Reverend
Mr. G. R. Gurney of Victor.

ed In a navy blue ensemble of soft
wool wearing a rose satin blouse and
carrying navy blue accessories She
wore a corsage of pink rosebuds and
baby’s breath.

Mr. Nelson is a member of one of
the pioneer families of Victor and
after graduating from the Victor
high school attended the University
1 of Kansas where he majored in elec-
trical engineering He is a member
| of Theta Tau. a professional engin-
eering fraternity.
Following a honeymoon spe*t in
Colorado Springs the young couple
will make their home in Victor where
Mr. Nelson is connected with the
Colorado International Mining com-

Dudley became the bride of Mr
V. L. Drvden at a quiet ceremony in
i the First Methodist church in Mc-
Allen at 7 o’clock Monday evening
with Rev. M. D. Council of the
church officiating.
The bride was attended by Miss
Rubalee Rupe and Mr. Paul T. Vick-
ers served as the groom's attendant.
Others witnessing the rites were Mr.
and Mrs. John Adams. Misses Bertha.
Annabel and Virginia Adams and
Mrs Helen Dryden.
Mrs. Drvden is the only daughter
of Mrs. Frank Dudley and the late
Mr Dudley and a graduate of Shary-
land high school. The groom is the
son of Dr. and Mrs. Sterling L. Dry-
den of Enid. Okla.
Mr and Mrs. Dryden expect to
leave Sunday to make their home in
Hollywood. Calif. where Mr. Dry-
den is employed as stunt man by a
movie company.

o’clock Tuesday evening at a quiet
ceremony in the Catholic rectory
with Father Michael pronouncing
the rites.

Emil Duensing. Miss Sunnie Garri-
son. Mrs. J. F. Tanner. Miss Evelyn

Mrs. Tanner is the popular young
daughter of Mr and Mrs. T. W.
Thies. She was a member of the
1830 Mission high school graduating
class and has made her home here
the past 12 years.
The groom is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. J. F. Tanner and is also a grad-
uate of Mission high school. Mr.
Tanner is employed by the Donald
Webb company of McAllen. He and
Mrs Tanner are at home in the T.
W. Thies residence.

"Popular Music” and this was fol-
lowed with a group of popular num-
bers which dated from the gay nine-
ties to the present time.

the Eastern Star held its regular
meeting Tuesday night when Mrs.
Mabel Thomason of Donna deputy
grand matron of fifth district section
eight made her official visit.
Many good thoughts were brought
to the chapter by Mrs. Thomason.
In her talk she complimented the
officers on their splendid work.
Mrs. Juanita Whittlesey and Mrs.
Caroline Storms sang appropriate
songs and furnished the music
throughout the degree work.
Mrs. Ethel Armstrong read "Mem-
ory's Casket.” after the closing of
the chapter. A lovely gift was pre-
sented the deputy grand matron by
the chapter with Mrs. Cecil Marcell
making the presentation In a few
well chosen words.

Benefit Card Party
Will Be Staged By
Sacred Heart Unit
The Sacred Heart Unit of the Al-
tar Guild of the Sacred Heart church
will entertain at a benefit card par-
ty Tuesday night at 8 o'clock at the
Sacred Heart parish hall. Mrs. John
Cicener is chairman of the com-
mittee in charge of the event.
The commntee has taken a num-
ber of reservations already and a
great many more are expected. Any-
one desiring information or to make
a reservation will please call Mrs.
Cleaner at 878-W.
A number of attractive trophies
will be given away at the close of
the evening's play. The committee
hopes that all tourists will avail
themselves of this opportunity to
become better acquainted with
Brownsville folk.

Has Meeting

PHARR. Peb. 16 —The members of
the Progress club met Monday aft-
ernoon at the home of Mrs. Merle
Kelley with Mrs. L. L. Lewis assist-
ing Mrs. Kelley. The living room
was attractively decorated with
bowls of lovely nasturtiums and
bweet peas Mrs. W. Linn and Mrs
J Buckmaster were in charge of the
program. The topic discussion was
Gardening.” Mrs. Linn and Mrs
Buckmaster both gave Interesting
talks on their gardens and the care
of different kinds of gardens. Mrs.
Mellenbruch of San Juan who owns
rhe San Juan Flower Gardens was
present and gave a very Interesting
talk on having a successful cactus
garden. At the conclusion of the
program the hostess served very de-
licious refreshments. There were
about 25 members present. The club
will have Its Guest Day meeting at
the Valley Institute February 25.

A pretty bridal shower was given
Monday at the home of Mrs. Glen
Brittain in compliment to Miss Le-
iha Mae Allen daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Otis Allen whose marriage to
Mr. Creighton Close of Mission was
to take place Friday evening. The
Britain home was attractively em-
phasizing the Valentine theme. Gar-
den flowers lent color and charm
to the reception rooms. Mrs. Glen
Brittain and Mrs. Otis Allen greet-
ed the guests at the door. Receiving

Bell After the arrival of the guests
little Misses Doris Brittain and Jo-
anna Coates dressed as cupids pre-
sented the honoree with two bas-
kets filled with many dutiful gifts
and greetings from Miss Allen’s
Sunday school classmates and
friends. Later in the afternoon a
unique game was played In which
recipes were telegraphed and rec-
orded in a book for future use. Re-
freshments of punch and wafers
wee serred to 35 guests. Miss Allen
graduated from the Pharr-San
Juan-Alamo high school class of
1934 and is widely known in the
Valley where she has many friends

of Mias Ruth Ruecking to Mr- 8
Richard Busbee. Jr. son of Mr. and
Mrs. 8. R. Busbee. was made at a
beautifully appointed tea 8undav
afternoon at the Ruecking home
Mrs. Edlty Baker. Mrs. Dors Weese.
Mrs. Mildred Jones and Miss Mar-
jorie Cramer assisted In hostess du-
ties. Greeting the guests at the door
were Mrs. Ruecking and Mrs. Bus-
bee. Receiving with the honoree
were Miss Marie Busbee and Mrs.
Oene Dameron. the latter presiding
over a bride's book In which each
guest registered. Two large floor
baskets holding nosegays of yellow
acacia and lavender statee were I
placed at vantage points. A profu-
sion of orange blossoms red and
pink begonia and Boston ferns add-
ed to the beauty of the reception
rooms. The pretty ecru lace-covered
table held a centerpiece of a minia-
ture church with a walk leading
to the doorway by which a petite
bride and groom were waiting. 8ur-;
rounding the quaint little church;
were shrubbery and flowers and at
one side was a lake with water al-
lies. Mesdames Baker. Weese and
Jones presided at the tea service
and were assisted in serving by Miss
Cramer. Favors were embossed cupid
folders bearing the Inscription

musical program was rendered by
Knight Baker and Miss Cectle Jones
and Miss Mary Virginia Polk. Sev-
enty-five guests called during the
afternoon.
Mrs. E C. White and her house
guests. Mrs Willingham and Mrs
May of Birmingham. Ala. enjoyed
an excursion trip to Monterrey.
Mexico the past week-end. Mrs. D 1
C..Hogan of Pharr also took the
excursion trip to Monterrey.
Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Tanner and
little son spent the past week-end
In San Antonio visiting with rela-
tives.
ANNOUNCEMENT
The pupils of Miss Margaret E
MacConachie will be heard In re-
cital the latter part of the week in
the main auditorium of the Central
Christian church. The choir of the
church will also be heard in the very
enjoyable musical offering that has
been arranged.
