SAN BENITO TO
GREET ST. NICK
Santa to Make Farly Visit
For Open House On
Thursday Night
^ (Special to The Herald l
#AN BFNITO Dec. 5. - Even
Florida and California would give
a lot to have a climate like the
Valley's said Santa Claus after
•pending two days in the Valley
thawing out his whisker* after
months of preparation at the North
Pole for Christmas.
Santa Claus arrived in San
Benito a few days ago to visit
Children m Cameron county schools
and to advise them of hi? personal
appearance Thursday night at the
Christmas open house to be held
by San Benito merchants. Santa
visited schools from Santa Maria
to Port Isabel distributed candy
and told the pupils to be at the
big open house when San Benito
merchants will place their new
Christmas merchandise on display.
Santa al.-o will greet old friends
and make new ones.
Manager Pete H. Smith of the
chamber of commerce who per-
sonally conducted Santa on a tour
of the schools of the community
•aid that many of the teachers ap-
peared as happy as the kids them-
selves to see Old Nick. It is
estimated that Santa visited at
least 2500 school children Tuesday
distributing 200 pounds of candy.
The town is giving Santa a royal1
welcome. The streets are being
decorated with red and green
Christmas lights and the window*
also are being filled with toys and
other gifts. There will be music
and souvenirs for visitors as at
past open house meetings.
One of the features of the open
house will be the treasure hunt.
Tickers have been distributed free.
The tickets are numbered and at
seven oclock numbers 1 on mer-
chandise in various windows will
be uncovered Those able to match
numbers on their tickets with num-
bers on articles in the wmdows may
walk in and claim the prizes.
The retail trade committee of
the chamber of commerce of which
J. W. Spradley is chairman is in
charge of the open house this sea-
son.
