CABLE BCG* CAUSES TELEPHONE TROUBLE
Ono of the most unusual of all types of causes of telephone
cable trouble encountered by telephone repairmen, was un-
covered today when local workmen found that a "Cable Bug"
had bored through the sheathing of the Joshua cable, allowing the
cable to become wet. This causea some of the phones in that
area to be in trouble.
This particular insect had bored a hole through the lead-cover-
ed cable and formed a hard shell, similar to a cocoon, on the out-
side. During excessive rains, moisture penetrated the cable causing
the wires to become unserviceable.
This is the first case of such an insect found in this area, but
along the gulf coast isolated cases of trouble by this insect have
been reported.
. Since the telephone cable is strung along the Santa Fe right-
of-way, local officials are of the opinion that the insect may have
been brought this far north by a train, then located itself on the
cable after leaving the train.
