“This polio situation will never be

stringent basic sanitation measures”,
the State Health Officer declared.
Social Security News
The month of July is one of the
four months each year when social
security tax returns must be filed by
all employers in commerce and in-
dustry. These returns will report
wages paid during April, May and
June. The tax return should be
mailed to the Collector of Internal
Revenue, Dallas, Texas, and not to
the Amarillo Social Security Office.
A social security tax return is not
complete unless it shows the full
name and social security account
number of each employee. The em-
ployer can be sure of having this in-
formation if he will insist that each
new employee show his social security
card at the time he is hired. Any
employer having dificulty getting
social security numbers for all his em-
ployees is invited to contact the
Amarillo office and a representative
will call on his next visit which will
be Wednesday, July 27th.

Mr. and Mrs.
A. Mathuessen
“The filth on your premises may
cause the disease to attack your neigh-
bor; and the same condition on his
premises may cause polio in your
home. This problem of controlling
polio is one demanding the closest
possible cooperation, and until a pro-
gram of continuous cleaning up is in-
stituted and stringently enforced, we
shall continue to face the menace of
polio in all section of the State.
Dr. Cox emphasized to parents
whose children are suffering from
poliomyelitis, the comforting know-
the most successful years in the his-
tory of- Lions International, accord-
ing to the report made by Melvin
Jones, Chicago, Illinois, Secretary-
General and founder of the Associ-
ation. He reported the addition of
757 new Lions Clubs and 23,282 men
to the roster of the Association dur-
ing the twelve-month period ended
June 30, 1949, for a total of 7,427
clubs and 331,426 members. He stated
also that during the fiscal year Lions
Clubs were established in four ad-
ditional countries: France Bolivia.
Philippines and Norway. Lions Inter-
national, he added, is the largest
strongest and most active service club
organization in the world, with Lions
Clubs in 26 countries on five con-
tenients.
Fisher, in accepting the presidency,
said: “During the past few years, we
have become more fully aware of the
international implications of the old
truth that man cannot live unto him-
self, and that security for the individ-
ual is impossible as as long as there is
national or international insecurity
anywhere in the world. To that end
we have raised our sights seemingly
higher with each succeeding year un-
til we now include in our Lions pro-
gram the international problems con-
fronting all nations, particularly those
intimately related to the maintenance
and preservation of world pease.

cases of recognized polio recover com-
pletely, and at least 25 to 35 percent
of recognized cases recover with only
minor disabling paralysis.
“Only about 8 per cent of polio
victims develop the deadly bulbar
type, which affects the nerves at the
base, or bulb of the brain,” Dr. Cox
said. “Most patients suffering from
bulbar polio, die within a very short
time. But it is a comforting thought
that 92 per cent of polio ‘ patients

recovery and are restored to health. ’
