SHOW WAS BIGGEST AND BEST YET - The antique farm machinery
exhibit at the recent Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show was the biggest
and best since it was undertaken five years ago, says Chairman H.E.
Vogel of Mercedes. "Now we're asking for the help of area farmers and
ranch owners to keep an eye out for additional items that can help the
exhibit continue to grow,” he says. Particularly welcome would be old
style cotton equipment and hay cutting and baling machines, he adds.
• ‘Our object is the preserving of this antique machinery in order to help
shed light on the history of farm/agriculture development,” he says.
Seen above in Mr. Vogel's photo are Alfred Townsend's motors and
farm trucks, as well as some of the 43 tractors displayed this year.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CITIZENS OF MERCEDES
Once again the citizens of Mercedes are faced with the task of electing
candidates to fill the offices of city government.
When we are making our choice we should consider the present and more
importantly the future. Our present elected officials have forgotten that the
city of Mercedes belongs to the citizens and that they were elected to office to “
represent those citizens.
Mayor Garcia was elected to head our city commission and lead them in
making decisions for the good of the people and lead our city toward progress
and prosperity.
Instead she rules the commission and makes decisions that tend to benefit
her own future political aspirations. She is not concerned with the wishes of the
people when they do not concur with her own. This has been demonstrated
many times during the past two years. Most recently our mayor demonstrated
her indifference when a petition containing 500 signatures was presented to
her during a city commission meeting. The petition demanded that the city 99
commission conduct an investigation into the termination of our Chief of
Police. The mayor and the commission ignored the petition and the requested
investigation was not conducted. To date the mayor has not addressed the
disposition of the petition to those concerned citizens.
Although surrounding neighbors as well as the Planning and Zoning Board
voted against a variance request by Camargo’s Boots to set up a warehouse,
mayor Garcia and company went against the wishes of the people as well as
their own zoning board.
More recently the Planning and Zoning Board, following the
recommendation of city staff (Mr. Ricardo Garcia), denied a request to set up 4
an auto body shop on Mathis, only to have the mayor and commissioners go
against city staff and Planning and Zoning. The commission had previously set
a precedent when they denied a gentleman to set up a mechanic shop. In
essence they went against their own actions.
The time has come to return the government of our city to the citizens. The
time has come to elect a mayor and commissioners who will represent the
welfare of the citizens and not their own self-serving needs.
