I have long wondered how much
overlap there is in the food habits of
needlefish and ribbon fish. These
two species may be strong food

inches.
Needlefishes live at the surface
and they are protectively colored for
this mode of life. They arc green to
bluish-green on the back and grade
to silvery white on the sides and
abdomen.
They arc readily caught on flics,
jigs or live bait. Their habit of
walking on their tails when hooked
makes them spectacular fighters.
Few people along the Texas coast
eat them, but needlefish arc edible
and arc said to have a very good
flavor.

Needlefish occur along the coast
from Maine to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,
but they arc absent from the
Bahamas and the Antilles.
They arc primarily found in
shallow marine waters, but needle-
fish may enter coastal streams. Often
they occur in small schools and they
arc most active at night. Spawning is
though to occur in both fresh and
saltwater.
Needlefish feed heavily on small
fish, young stages of crabs, and on
various kinds of small crustaceans.

AUSTIN - The Texas president
may have softened his stance on
new taxes, but the Texas governor
has not.
While the Legislature edges
nearer to enacting a state personal
income tax, it appears to be
dawning on the state’s cadre
N
h
to negotiate a compromise finance
plan, and Sen. Carl Parker, the
Senate’s lead negotiator, said, “I
detect a ray of hope. ”
The governor remains opti-
mistic that after he vetoes the new
bill, the Legislature will agree on
a plan and keep Kilgarlin out of
the process.
Veteran observers aren’t betting
on it. The Democratic wheels are
in motion to let Kilgarlin draw the
plan, which pressures local school
districts to raise taxes in August,
and then blame it all on Clements.
Republicans are hopeful that
rural districts will benefit, and that
metropolitan school trustees will
obey voters’ wishes by cutting fat
and raising taxes.
Race Track Loan Default .
A Brady horse racing track,
insolvent and under investigation,
apparently will be unable to
repay a $495,000 federal loan
approved by the Texas Department
of Commerce.
State authorities will meet this
week with Brady city officials
to discuss their options after
investors with Heart of Texas
Racing Inc. closed the track and
announced they are insolvent..
Other Highlights
■ This Legislature, meeting last
week for its 265 day last week, set
a new Texas record for the most
days in session during a regular
two-year cycle. The old record
of 264 days was set in 1933-34
during the administration of Gov,
Miriam “Ma” Ferguson.
■ State education commissioner
Bill Kirby announced higher scores
for Texas pupils on minimum
skills tests over four years ago.
Kirby said more students passed
all the tests, particularly in the
lower grades where education re-
forms were stressed.
■ Recent U.S. Department of
Commerce data ranked four Texas
cities among the nation’s poorest
and none among the richest. The
McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area
ranked last with a per capita
income of $7,300, closely joined
by Brownsville-Harlingen, Laredo
and El Paso.

from above and light if seen from
below. When needlefishes are
threatened by predators, they try to
escape by “skittering” i.e. skipping
rapidly along the surface. This
behavior makes it difficult for a
predator to keep the needlefish in
sight because it may change direc-
tion while out of the water.

The name "needlefish" refers to
