Coach Edmundo Rincon, Ryan Jackson, T.J. Justice,
LOOK INTO ONE END of the telescope and you see an enlargement of
the view. Look into the other end of that same telescope and you’ll see
quite a different perspective.
So it is with us today, getting a taste of the bitter medicines of
interference, intervention and invasion. We don’t like the taste of what we
have been dishing out to other countries and societies.
IRAQ INVADES KUWAIT! We know how Iraq feels ’cause we’ve felt
that same way, our national interest given us the right, even the obligation
to impose our will on smaller, tiny and weaker nations.
Like Iraq, we morally justified our incursions into others’ affairs and
territories, citing threats to us, our disapproval of their political
philosophies or structures, or blatantly, regional security, and oh, yes, the
canal.
We got away with our brand of imperialism. Iraq may not because her
actions constitute a threat to international economies in the control of over
50 percent of the world oil supply. Practiclly every national interest has
been or will be affected by the invasion of Kuwait, and naturally they are
all hot about it, as we are. (no reformer like one recently reformed).
OUR FREEBOOTING INCURSIONS were on the whole, losers. Sure,
we won militarily, and why not? (Grenada, 10,000 men, 60 ships, 335
planes, tanks and artillery just overwhelmed the 600-man Cuban airport
workers armed with deadly picks and shovels). We not only made
enemies, we lost friends and international respect because of the
transparenies of the puppet governments we have installed or supported.
In several cases the world court ruled against us, but we refused to accept
their verdict, and we, being the biggest guy on the block, who was going
to enforce the judgement? The world disapproved and even snickered at
some of our military and political ineptness while accepting the status
quo.
AFTER ALL, OUR ACTION only slightly endangered world peace, and
had little or no effect on the world economy.
Well, Iraq is not the big-one that we are, although she could and can
be a tough customer to handle. You can forget about a world host of
armies marching on Iraq. Big wars aren’t fought that way anymore
(something our Pentagon doesn’t know yet).
No, the scenario is clear. Iraq plainly stated “You guys keep out of our
affairs, or else!" Or else is catastrophe to the major oil reserves in the
ground as well as destruction of the production facilities in the gulf area.
The Iraqis are not fools; playing for keeps, they are prepared and
conditioned to wreak total destruction in retaliation to punitive military
action against them.
Just think of all the oil that has been pumped out of the gulf area!
Billions of barrels, trillions of gallons and where all that oil was is now
empty space. Iraq is known to have acquired nuclear technology from
China. A few nuclear devices lowered into those cavities, and BOOM, the
geological disruption would put half of the Arabian peninsula under
water, the oil contaminated a la Chernobyl. Iraq has gas warfare
capability and knows how to use it. The new types are persistent, and once
in place make an area uninhabitable for years.
WE AND THE WORLD got a problem.
We have missed the point brought on by the present crisis. Our whole
civilization is predicated on the use of oil, a rapidly dwindling natural
resource, and we rely on hopeful guesses about how long it will last.
Political and military or economic factors may, have and will interrupt oil’s
accessability from time to time; but the day will come as surely as the
sunrise, when there is no more oil!
THEN WHAT?
