BANG! BANG! BANG! Those are sounds you’ve never heard before.
Oh, sure, you’ve heard the backfire of a car, firecrackers, a shoot-’em-up
western or maybe aTV cop shoot-out or a war movie. But not the “Bang!”
“Bang!” “Bang!” of shots fired in anger. You’ve never heard the
"Whomp!" “Whomp!” of artillery shells, the rattlesnake whirr of
shrapnel, or the incredible sound and blast wave of 1000-pound bombs.
How about the soft, quick “thuckt” of a round striking the torso of the
man next to you? His little gasp as he falls? You don’t hear the round that a
strikes the arm or leg unless it hits a bone. Then you’ll hear that cry of “
agony, “Medic!” “Medic!” “Medic!”
AND THERE IS ANOTHER SOUND you’ve never heard. Joyous
feasting. The squeals of relish and gusto in enjoying the Horsd’oeu’vres of
war. Tidbits, they are to some. You see, in war, there are casualties, and
very often battle conditions make it impossible to recover the dead, dying
and helpless wounded from the field. Night falls, and the rats come out.
Tidbits, the ears, nose, lips and tongue from those we think of as fallen in
honored glory.
Could you, in your mind’s eye, turn over one of those now lumps of —
clay, look into that half-skulled face, and hear yourself saying “Thank you “
for making an effort to help me continue to buy cheaper gas?” It really is
the least you could do. You sent him there.
How easy it is to send men to kill and be killed, spend enormous sums
(money we don’t have, and have yet to borrow) to bring suffering and
destruction to a people much like us, who said little or nothing about the
course of events.
THE ARAB RULERS, those for and against us, have been imposed on
the Arab people by military coups and/or assassination, tribal and
religious wars. The Arab people, like us, having the struggle to make a
living, are like us in having little time or inclination to question the O
decisions of leaders. Our likeness ends there as we have representative
government, and COULD by calls and letters to our political leadership,
express ourselves on matters of national policy. The time may come when
we will wish we had.
Oil has put us on the slippery slope to war. It really dosen’t matter who
we buy the oil from, it does matter that we, in our present state, have to
buy oil from sources dependent on political, military or economic whims.
And that is only part one of the equation. The whole equation asks the
question “Why do we base our whole civilization on the energy of a finite
resource?”
YOU CAN LOOK AT IT THIS WAY. The lives of men aside, we are
spending billions in the Gulf Crisis effort, billions that are to insure that
we continue to depend on the resources of others.
If those same billions, those spent and to be spent, were expended in
the development of alternative, renewable energy sources, we’d be using
our smarts. Brasil, a third world country with enormous problems, has
solved most of the energy portions with the use of alcohol as fuel. Alcohol
simply made from grain or sugar cane, commodities we have mountainous
stores of in overflowing elevators and storage bins. We have so much we
give it away, pay farmers not to grow more, and shamefully have used it
as political and economic weapons.
COULD IT BE we should drown our troubles in drink? It might give us
gas!
