NEWS BRIEFS

Don't we all love the daffodils
that'tell us spring is on its way.
John Tarleton Memorial Park has
just blossomed into a beautiful dis-
play of daffodils. This plot of-our
school's founder is kept up by
members of the faculty and stu-
dents who want to keep his mem-
ory alive with a beautiful, ever-
lasting memorial. And after the
daffodils will come many other
lovely flowers.
After a long ride in the morning,
the Swing Cadets reported a suc-
cessful Saturday night at Fort
Hood. C. W. Re'ynolds and his
swing band provided music for the
Officers' Club dance there.
It is interesting to note that of
the 13 members, all are music
majors except two. Both of these,
Gene Allen, junior pharmacy n.ajor
from Stephenville, and Charles
Neblett, senior from Stephenville,
are in the saxophone section. And
of the 11 music majors only four
are seniors. The seniors include
pianist Janice Alsup and vocalist
Eva Von Wyatt, both from Steph-
enville, James McCloud, saxophone
player from Graford, and trumpet-
er Tommy Dawson of Georgetown.
Members of the traditional or-
ganization are Charles Eagle of
Beaumont, All, McCloud and Neb-
lett of the saxophone section; brass
players Manuel Garza from Wes-
laco, Dawson, Ralph Iiatliff and
James Mabry, both of Killeen;
rhythii) members Alsup, Robert
Shanks and Jack Partin, both from
Freeport; vocalist Wyatt &nd band
leader Reynolds.
I hear that a jazz band is being
imported fo rthe Military Ball
when we have an excellent swing
orchestra of our own. But, as the
saying goes, there's always good
in- everything; and I imagine the
girl friends of the fellows in said
orchestra will enjoy casting away
their titles as "orchestra wives"
for a while. You know, an orches-
tra wife is a girl who goes to a
dance and sits watching her date
play for other people to ''dance.
And occasionally (about three
times, maybe) some kind-heatred
male asks her to dance.
But back to the Military Ball.
All the cadets on the various com-
mittees have been buzzing, around
like the little bee, making final
preparations for. the big event.
And all the girls have been dis-
cussing what they are going to
wear (maybe Mother will send me
that exquisite necklace). It's build-
ing up so much that it should be
a tremendous climax and some-
thing to write home about for
weeks.
