By DeW ITT MACKENZIE
NEW YORK (A» — The self-im-
posed censorship of the British
press in connection with the friend-
ship between King Edward and Mrs
Wally Simpson and the attractive
American's divorce suit. Is a striking
example of the traditional protective
attitude of the newspapers toward!
royalty and especially the throne.
The papers consistently refrain
from publishing news that may
cause annoyance pain or inconven-
ience to the royal family. Some-
times there is a request from the
palace to newspaperdom to sup-
press something and such request!
always are granted. More often the
editors act of their own accord.
For example several years ago a
sncooy fellow got hold of the private
diary of the then Pnnce of wales
and tried to sell It to a publisher
There naturally was a fortune In the
book but the publisher promptly
notified the authorities and the
diary was returned Intact to lti
owner.
Throne Binds Empire
But there is more than respect
and reverence for royalty In this at-
titude It is a truism In England
that the throne is the symbol which
holds the empire together; that ti
the throne goes the empire dis-
solves. Because of this the paper?
suppress anything that may reflect
adversely on the throne.
If England no longer subscribe*
’ exactly to the old doctitie that the
king can do no wrong. It come!
. Ion to it In any event if a rulet
should make a mistake the pres*
would protect h m against hlmsell
that is. would safeguard the dig-
I nity of that all-important throne.

Britain’s King ‘Can Do No Wrong’-
j If He Does the Press Ignores It
by a cheering crowd which would
light to get near him.
If the British press picks up the
Simpson story. It will be because it
feels compelled to do so in defense
of the throne. But it will take a lot
of pushing to force London's Street
of Ink to abandon its age-old policy
regarding royalty.

EMPIRE BINP1R
That is how the British press %res
the crown—and the ret son nothing
derogatory is printed about the
king who wears it.
Thus far the public has chosen to
regard the king's friendship with
Mrs Simpson as his prlvat eaffair
(though many Britons say it is get-
ting uncomfortably close to being a
matter of state) and England never
mtrudes on royal privacy So far as
Edward la concerned his adoring
subject* gave him plenty of leeway
when he was Prince of Wales—
"Prince Charming" they called him
Perhaps the question ma\ arise now
as to whether as klng-emneror. he
can do things he did as heir.
Public Just Smiled
The fascinating Mrs Simpson Is
not by a long way the first friend
Edward has had and in several in-
stances the romance was of con-
siderable duration
The public merely smiled and said
"boys will be boys." The newspapers
were silent When Edward was "off-
duty" as prince he was accorded all
the privacy of an ordinary citizen.
If he appeared m a cafe to dance
—and he often did—nobody paid the
slightest attention to him or his
lady. They got bumped by other
dancers the same as anybody else.
He used to iike to u(> hack of the
scenes at musical shows and he
wasn’t the Prince of Wales there
If he got in the way the ladies o.
the chorus used to push him aboir
like any ordinary mortal. Let tf
prince desert his role of plain Mr
David Winsor. however and h*
would be surrounded immediately
