WASHINGTON. Feb. 11 {JPy—
Senators leading the fight against
the president's court reorganization
l rofrara claimed thirty-two “sure’’
opposition votes Thursday and de-
clared a score ol others were pos-
sible.
Members ol the latter group they
said were not definitely committed.
About thirty senators have declared
openly in favor of the proposals.
Forty-nine votes will be required
to defeat the program if all mem-
bers are present when the roll finally
i* called probably after long de-
bate.
Conferences between Mr. Roose-
velt and several democrats however I
brought renewed predictions from
administration leaders of approval
lor tlie entire program including en-
largement ol the supreme court if
justices over 70 do not retire.
The president went over his rec-
ommendations m detail late Wedues- j
cay with live democratic members
o. the senate Judiciary committee:
Neely of West Virginia McCarraii
of Nevada McGill of Kansas Hutch
of New Mexico and Hughes of Dela-
ware.
Henatc leaders indicated quick ap-
proval by that body of the proposal
io permit supreme court justices to
retire voluntarily at 70 with lull pay
lor life.
The house appioved the bill Wed- j
nesday 315 to seventy-five after de-
feating a republican amendment to
raise the retirement age to 75.
