Instantly killed authentic reports of
the actual details of the tragedy
were learned here Thursday along
with the report that the lone Ameri-
can male survivor. William Bills Mc-
Allen had only a "fifty-fifty" chance
to live.
Bills is still in the Gonzales hos-
pital in Monterrey where he was
taken with Ml&s Josephine Evans
of Pharr and six Injured Mexicans
all victims of the crash in which
Miss Madge Colburn daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Colburn of
Pharr Mu* Katherine Gillespie. Mc-
Allen John M. Russell and Wel-
borre Osborne both engineers of
the Sun Oil company. McAllen were
lulled Since that time two of the
Mexican men who were injured have
died bringing the total to eight.
According to the word received
here. Bills is suffering from severe
lacerations about the face and head
and suffered a skull fracture just
above the eyes causing hemorrhages
from the nose which have given at-
tending physicians their greatest
concern since they have been un-
able to control the flow. With In-
formation varying it was definitely
stated that no charges have been
filed against Bills by Mexican au-
thorities and none la contemplated.
As to the actual details of the
crash it was teamed through au-
thoritative sources that two trucks
loaded with Mexican highway labor-
ers had stopped about fifty miles
north of Monterrey one on the edge
of the highway on Its own aide of
the road and with lt« lights burning
the other directly opposite without
lights and standing on the highway.
When the Valley car. driven by
Bills and occupied by the two other
men and three girls swerved to pass
the truck with its light* burning it
crashed into the second truck with-
out lights The six persons were in-
stantly killed

Rail Regulation
HARLINGEN. March 11. —J J
Moore of Victoria assistant super-
intendent of the Southern Pacific
Lines was here this week seeking
the aid of Valley interests in op-
posing House Bill No. 347 and
Senate Bill No. 173 limiting the
length of freight trains in Texas to
70 cars and passenger trains to 14
cars.
The claim of the sponsors of the
legislation that it is a safety
measure is attacked by the rail-
roads which declare that the ac-
cident records of the Texas rail-
road commission during 1936 fail to
reveal a single employe or passen-
ger killed in accidents involving
long trains.
The railroads claim that the real
purpose of the legislation is to
create additional jobs for tram
service employes who are a pre-
ferred class well and generously
paid.
The railroads claim they do not
have the 33.000.000 with which to
1 meet the Increased cost of operat-
ing trams under the proposed law;
that aimilar law* have been held
invalid and that the Interstate
Commerce Commission is already
empowered to regulate length of
i trains.
Raymondville Plant
Large Trailer Camp
RAYMONDVILLE. March 11—A
proposed trailer camp for transient
laborers in Willacy county was the
subject discussed at a meeting of
the c.-c. county commissioners
court and the city commission here
Wednesday. A committee including
Harry W. Cook. R. F. Robinson. H.
L. Snow and Z. L. Williams was nam-
ed to select a site for the proposed
camp and to consider ways and
means to finance the project.
It was recommended that a twen-
ty-acre flat within one and one-half
miles of the city on a paved highway
be secured for erection of the camp
which is to provide facilities for an
estimated 2.000 laborers now in the
Valley.
